Bachelor Jake Pavelka and Vienna Done!

Chris Harrison refereed last night as Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi's much awaited public announcement of their split was televised. And rather than a civil breakup, it was a train wreck (or should we say plane crash?), but didn't we all see that coming?

Jake, The Warning Signs Were There

During the filming of The Bachelor, Jake was repeatedly warned by the other ladies about Vienna being childish and selfish, but he decided to ignore their opinions. Vienna even snuck into Jake's room one night in a sexy little outfit trying to seduce him, and Jake overlooked her overt actions. And he didn't even see the red flags when he was introduced to her Dad and dog. Even Vienna herself told Jake how spoiled she was and how her Dad gave her everything she wanted. No, week after week, Vienna got the rose and Jake let other classy ladies take that limo drive out of his life. And in the end, much to everyone's chagrin (including the television audience) Jake proposed to Vienna.

But none of us will ever know if that picture of Vienna was true, and even though we hoped that Jake knew what he was doing when he set off to find forever after with Vienna, he obviously didn't pick the right girl for him.

Vienna vs. Jake, The Ugly Tabloid Stories

It's never easy to let go of a relationship, but Vienna will never be accused of doing it in style. She sold trash to the tabloids, the amount undisclosed. And she didn't just sell a break up story, but instead went for Jake's jugular, painting a less than savory picture of him that includes his diet, refusal to have sex with her, emotional abuse, controlling anger, and even called him a "fame whore". The the g-a-y word has even crept into the tabloid storyline with The Huffington Post publishing an article that furthers these rumors, "Bachelor Jake Pavelka Has 'Gay Tendencies' Contestants" .

Jake, in turn, has accused Vienna of cheating on him, which Vienna has vehemently denied. And Jake's previous smiling face has contorted into some unrecognizable stony mask, with a deer-in-the-headlights expression. It's also becoming questionable as to whether Jake was really looking for a wife as The Bachelor, or re-entrance into Hollywood. After all, his bio on The Hollywood Gossip tells us that he is also known as Jake Landrum "from when he did some acting earlier in life". Was he fooling us?

Vienna's Meltdown

Jake and Vienna's sit-down with Harrison went from bad to ugly fast. Vienna took cheap shots at Jake and wouldn't let him finish a sentence. And, even if she was telling the truth, her message got lost in her immature delivery, that came close to throwing a tantrum on national television. Once she had her say (allowing Jake only a few minutes to speak at all), she had a tearfilled meltdown and stormed off the set, leaving Chris, Jake and the rest of us shaking our heads.

But Jake doesn't get kudos either, as he seemed to support some of Vienna's claims about being controlling and verbally abusive. While we understood that he was frustrated that Vienna kept rudely interrupting him, he would have been better off to stay silent than to bark at her the way he did in such a loud and angry voice! And was it really necessary for him to accuse her of cheating? The whole exchange seemed very childish and definitely entered the TMI Zone.

Breaking up is Hard to Do for the Bachelors

When you start a relationship in front of millions of people, you pay the price when it doesn't work out. But let's contrast last night's breakup with the break up between Bachelor Jason Mesnick and Melissa Rycroft.

Remember when Jason decided that he had let the right woman leave the show (Molly Malaney), and then dumped Melissa in the 'After the Rose' broadcast? That felt a bit sensational to me, and it was obvious that Melissa was very hurt. But Melissa maintained composure and accepted the news with a grand dose of grace, and Jason took the heat for his change of heart like a man. Jason and Melissa acted like two adults who were doing their best to face such a painful situation in front of a camera, and neither of them set out to destroy the other with verbal barbs. And it turned out to be the right thing, because Jason and Molly were married February 27, 2010, and Melissa went on to compete on Dancing with the Stars, has had other TV spots, and became engaged to a guy back home!

No, Jake and Vienna's public breakup was nothing similar to Jason and Melissa's. And Vienna claimed on the show that their bliss only lasted a month, which means that they were falling apart even before the televised "After the Rose" show, and during Jake's stint on Dancing with the Stars. (I can still picture Vienna in the audience during every DWTS show and Jake practically throwing her kisses after his performances!) Last night's expose of their real relationship and explosive breakup just might blow both their reputations to smithereens.

What Does the Future Hold for Jake Pavelka and Vienna Giardi?

We all thought we were watching a rising star in Jake. From his status as rejected Bachelorette candidate, to The Bachelor, to contestant on Dancing with the Stars, to his hiring a publicist and rumors of other television opportunities. Now what for Jake? Can he survive all this ugliness and rumors?

And what about Vienna? How soon before she can find a guy who either hasn't seen the show or her televised meltdown, or is brave enough to accept her perceived spoiled behavior and doting daddy?

It's too bad that things worked out the way they have for Jake and Vienna, but those of us who watched their developing courtship on The Bachelor aren't really all that surprised. And unfortunately, something tells me that all this ugliness isn't over yet.
