Companies today, no matter what the job, have obscene requirements. Masters degrees are usually preferred. In a matter of 10 years the 4-year degree has gone down the tubes. Intelligent people are forced to take low-paying jobs because they are otherwise under qualified. For example, when did a customer service job at a call-center start requiring candidates to have a Bachelors, let alone a Masters? It's outrageous. Many people are capable of handling customers in a polite manner. They didn't need to go to school to master such skills. Where are these companies getting their employees, anyway, that make up these job requirements?
No longer is taking 4 years to study and socialize with like-minded people enough, nope, now it takes 6 or 7. If anything, this is keeping kids from getting out into the workforce, likely keeping them from learning life-lessons. Isn't the whole idea to prepare kids for the real-world? Before we know it, we'll be encompassed by a society of people who can claim they have a Ph.D, but can't run a dishwasher for the life of them. Or hem their pants. Or fold the laundry. So much for all those home-ec classes (which are no longer offered, by the way).
If anything, we are all sabotaging our own society. No one is worthy enough anymore. Bachelors degrees mean nothing. You won't even get an interview with some companies if they only see "B.A. from University of such and such a state". Since nothing is done face to face any more, you don't even have a sliver of a shot to dazzle managers with your wit and charm and intellect. It's all on paper (meaning, on the internet). For crying out loud, you can't even have your resume be a nifty color because it's all sent via e-mail.
Unfortunately, things won't change any time soon. Those poor people who graduated with a 3.8 undergraduate g.p.a are lost in the huge sea of others just like them. They aren't special, they aren't given a pat on the back. In one generation society has broken down to this, and will only continue to spiral out of control. Our technical world doesn't see people for who they are anymore, simply what they have accomplished. If you have a B.S, well, join the ranks and get a job doing administrative work because your classes in art history are going to get you nowhere.
