Back to School as a Non-Traditional Student

How to Go Back to School After Being Away

Education and academic success is more important now in the United States and today's economy then it has ever been in the past. For the most part, the days of going to school for a few years and then taking over the family business, or getting a great manufacturing job right out of high school to support your budding family are the stuff of urban myths and legends. Because an education is so valued many parents and other non-traditional students are finding that they have to go back to school to keep their current jobs and to become more competitive in the educated work force.

A great place to start your journey back to school is to do some background research on schools, programs, and jobs. You want to know what you will get out of going back to school. Do you want to make more money or have a fulfilling career are some of the questions you need to answer.

Next, set up an appointment to visit some local colleges or universities. Even if the schools are not tops on your list at least you will get the feeling of being back on campus and your pursuit of going back to school will become that much more tangible.

Depending on your family life and situation, you may not be making the decision to go back to school by yourself. You may have to cooperate with your husband, wife, or kids and work out a schedule that is realistic and fits your life style.

Some more practical tips and steps start with preparing for any entrance exams like the GMAT, the GRE, or the dreaded LSAT. Take a few practice tests and start writing, even if for fun, just to get your mind working and to loosen up those writing skills. Also, be sure to keep an eye on closing dates for applications.

Of course, one of the biggest road blocks in going back to school is the cost and financial burden. However, the government offers many federal student loan programs and even private banks are beginning to offer attractive loan packages for students.

While you are working through the back to school applications, or even if you are accepted and enrolling, remember to keep your eyes on the goal and to not get bogged down by one class, one teacher, or one assignment. Going back to school, whether it is high school or college, is a great way to improve yourself, and if you do not do it now, then you may not have the chance to go back to school later.
