Find Out What You Already Have
There's no reason to buy things that you don't need when going back to school. By looking at what you already have, you can avoid buying duplicates. For example, by looking at the school supplies I already had, I realized that I didn't need to buy any more pens or pencils. I also discovered that I had some crayons, but I could probably use some more. The same can be said for clothes. You may have plenty of shirts in good condition, but not as many pants.
Don't forget to check school items like backpacks, shoes, and fall jackets. While your kids might live in flip-flops or sandals now, they will need tennis shoes for many sports, or when the weather gets cooler. The weather may not be cold enough for jackets either. If your child needs shoes or jackets, you will want to put it on the list of things that you need to shop for.
Shop the Sales
If you start early enough, you should be able to get good deals on the things you need when your child returns to school. I have already written an article about how you can get school supplies for pennies. Try to purchase as many school supplies as you are likely to use for the whole school year now, as the prices will dramatically go up once the back-to-school sales are over. Similarly, look for sales on clothing, and shop for clothes when they cost less. Most stores will have back-to-school sales; you just have to look for them.
Don't Forget the Additional Expenses
At the beginning of the school year, there may be other expenses that you need to plan for. Your child may want you to pay activity fees; you may need to buy workbooks or pay for your child to participate in sports. If your child is in private school or is being homeschooled, you may need to buy books. Your child may need to see the doctor for immunizations or physicals. Try to find out what these fees will be in advance so you can set aside some money to pay for them.
Going back to school does cost a little money, but if you plan ahead and save on the purchases that you can, it can be a little bit easier to manage.
