The truth is, it doesn't matter what the latest fashion trends are. Those who are deemed the most "fashionable" people in the world never follow trends. They set them. This sounds like a difficult thing to achieve in school. After all, everyone wants to fit in. But, if you take some time to learn your own personal style, it will come across in the form of self-confidence. As long as you take the time to figure out how you want to dress, you will look great when you go back to school. Here's how to find your own style.
First, go to the mall. Even if you have been there a hundred times before and seen every article of clothing in the stores, you may not have really paid attention. Besides, you are not going to look at the clothes in the stores as much as you will "people watch". Sit down in the food court, and look at the people coming in. Notice what they are wearing. Find five people who you think look nice. Pay close attention to what they are wearing. Pay attention to colors, styles, fabrics, layering, etc. Say that you think a woman who is wearing a black sweater and nicely tailored blue jeans looks nice. You may be drawn to classics. If so, it would not make any sense to buy the latest ripped blue jeans, because you will not feel comfortable in them. Guys can also use this trick.
Second, find these type clothes in a store at the mall. Even if you would not typically try that type garment on, give it a shot. It may look good, or it may not. You will not know until you try the clothes on. And don't just stick to one color or style. You do not want to mimic the people you saw. You want to use some of the same ideas.
Third, do not be afraid to mix styles and find something that exactly expresses your unique personality. For example, guys might wear some nice dress trousers and a blazer, with a wild t-shirt underneath. Or they may wear the blazer and button-up shirt with a pair of ripped jeans underneath.
Fourth, do not be afraid to go against the trends, or better yet, incorporate only what you can use. Right now, everything seems to be Boho, and there are a lot of fall colors. I don't particularly care for either. But I can wear a nice boho top with a pair of dress trousers and a really tall pair of brightly colored heels. It will look far more classic than boho.
Fifth, do not be afraid to accessorize. This even goes for guys. A pair of earrings or a watch says that you took the time to really pull together the outfit. And for girls, a pair of shoes that matches one of the less noticed colors in your outfit and an interesting purse really make it look fashion-forward.
Sixth, think about getting several different pieces that can be worn with several other pieces. It would be especially good if they already match things you own. This way, you can incorporate garments that are already your favorites, and make completely new outfits. I have several outfits that only look right with one item. I really love them, but I hardly ever wear them.
Finally, make sure you take the weather into account. You do not want to wear too many layers if it is going to be hot where you live. Nor do you want to be shivering. By getting pieces that can be worn with several other pieces, you have a greater chance of still being able to pull together a great outfit and still feel comfortable, no matter what the weather.
