Classroom Icebreaker Game Ideas

The Icebreaker Backpack Game
A backpack game can be played similarly to purse games at baby showers. The difference is these back to school games for kids require a backpack and classroom supplies. Read your required school supplies aloud in front of the classroom. All supplies should be based on a list given to students on the first day of school. Instruct students to take every school supplies item called out of their backpack and place on the desk in front of them. Each student that has school supplies that you called in their backpack gets one point. Give prizes to students with the most points during this classroom icebreaker game.

Classmate Racing Back to School Games for Kids
Challenge students on how well they know fellow classmates with verbal racing themed back to school games. Set a timer and instruct students to call out names of other kids in their class before the allotted time has ended. Students should properly name all or most of their classmates for a prize. Teachers can also divide students into small groups to make this classroom icebreaker game idea easier to manage. There are lots of classmate racing games that can be played as a back to school icebreaker. A naming challenge can be modified by asking kids to name five girls in the class or identify boys whose name starts with a specific letter.

Classroom Scavenger Hunt
Help students become familiar with their new classroom by organizing a back to school scavenger hunt. Hide school supplies, fun activity books, toys and snacks around the classroom. Write a list of all hidden items on the chalkboard for this back to school icebreaker game. Keep a small sheet with reminders of where every item is located in case students do not find everything. Set a timer and let students search through their desks, classroom closets, shelves and storage bins to find items written on the chalkboard.

Quick Back to School Spelling Bee
Make a list of words that students should know from their previous school year. Terms that are related to summer vacation such as "picnic", "barbecue" and "sandcastle" can also be included on the list. Divide the classroom into groups that will compete against each other in a fast spelling bee challenge. Ask each group to spell an even number of words based on their skill level. Give points to each group that spells their challenge terms correctly. The group of students with the most points at the end of this game wins.
