Back to School: Getting Ready

Ramona Taylor
It seems the school year just ended and that summer has barely begun. However, it's time to start thinking about transitioning your kids from summer laziness to school readiness. The mornings were you worried more about sun block and shade than school supplies and shoes. However, getting your child ready for the new school year is more than about books and bus schedules. Here are some tips that will help you and your child be ready for that first day back.

Reset Slumber Time

Generally during summer, our body clocks get used to staying up late and sleeping in longer. For school, that will need to change. Gradually, work in the school rise schedule. However, don't make it a chore. Sleep is the body's reward for a great day of work and fun. Add old rituals like story or talk-time or reinstate new ones like bubble baths to encourage your child.

Plan the Day

Just as school has structure, gradually institute planned events to the summer schedule. If pool time is on Tuesday, Monday night pack for the next day. Gathering slippers, towels and sunglasses is not very different from gather book bags, shoes and school supplies. By the time school starts, your child will be ready for the routine.

Drop and Shop

Your child has probably grown and inch or two since the last school year and its time to buy new clothes. Have your child help sort out their old things and help you prepare them for consignment or donation. This activity will teach your child lessons about the importance of giving as well as help you clear the closet for new school items.

Drive Time

When you and your kids are running errands, take time to drive by their old school or their new school. Seeing the new building makes it a familiar part of their routine. You can talk about the fun they had the previous year or talk about the fun the hope to have the upcoming year.

Back to School Picnic or Cookout

There's always a good reason to celebrate. Why not celebrate going back to school. On the week or so before school starts, plan a small party or picnic where you, your kids, and their friends enjoy a nice cookout or picnic in your backyard or at your favorite park. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Sandwiches, chips, punch and cake are all you need for kids to have a great time. Your back to school shindig can be a time for parents to talk and kids to reconnect during their remaining days of summer!

Summer is a wonderful time for kids and their parents to enjoy one another. However, summer goes by so fast when you are having fun. Getting ready for the new school year can be just as fun!
