Back to School: How to Pick a First Day of School Outfit for a Kindergartner

Kristen May
The first day of kindergarten can be a very big deal for your child, and you will definitely want to pay attention to what outfit should be worn on the first day of school. These are some things you should look for in a first day of school outfit for your kindergartner.

First Day of Kindergarten Outfit: Familiar

When your child is entering such an unfamiliar school situation for the first time, it is very important that he or she be dressed in a familiar outfit. The first day of school is not the best time for something brand new, as it may be itchy or not quite fit right. Instead, your child should wear something that has been worn and enjoyed at least a few times before so you can be confident that there are not any distracting problems with the outfit.

First Day of Kindergarten Outfit: Comfortable

As touched on above, the first day of school outfit for your kindergartner should be comfortable. Girls shouldn't be sent to school in little lacy dresses, but should be in clothing that will allow them to move around comfortably and to not be itchy or distracted during school because of clothing that doesn't fit right.

First Day of Kindergarten Outfit: Presentable

While following the above guidelines of picking a familiar and comfortable outfit, it is also crucial that it is a presentable outfit. It shouldn't be so familiar that it is two sizes too small and has holes in it, or so comfortable because it is a pair of pajamas.

First Day of Kindergarten Outfit: Sensible Shoes

The shoes are also a very important part of the first day of school outfit, and they should follow the guidelines above as well, being both familiar and comfortable. Consider what your child will be doing on the first day of school, from sitting on the floor to running around on the playground, and select a pair of sneakers that will be versatile and comfortable for the whole day.

First Day of Kindergarten Outfit: Child Selected

Kindergarten is a big step of independence, and to help your child understand that, make sure that they get to pick their own outfit for the first day of kindergarten. Obviously, you can provide some of the guidelines above, but the ultimate choice should belong to your child. That way, he or she can be proud of what they picked, and will be sure to enjoy and be comfortable in that outfit.
