Back to School Planning Made Easy

Keep Anxiety Away from This Stressful Time of Year

Going back to school can be stressful, not only for the child, but for the parents as well. To minimize that stress as much as possible, these tips are sure to help out.

Back to School Shopping

Make a list. This may be obvious, but before heading out into the lion's den, take an inventory of supplies you have left over from last year. There may be a lot you don't actually need to go out and buy. If you're lucky, you may have also received a list of recommended school supplies from the school. Depending on what classes your child is taking, different curriculums require different things. If not, put together a list of your own of basic school supplies you think your child will need. It's good to get him involved in this, but be sure to separate wants from needs. The most important thing is to get the needed supplies, so that should come first.

Start as early as possible. Although it's a bit too late to go back to the beginning of the summer and start collecting supplies then, you can still beat the crowds and have the best selection by going school shopping early in the day - preferably during the week.

Buy in bulk. Things that will be needed a lot throughout the year, such as paper, pencils, notebooks, etc. will save you money and ease by buying it in bulk. Many office supply stores and dollar stores offer this option.

Keeping Anxiety Levels Low

As the first day of school creeps ever closer, your children may be feeling a bit anxious whether you realize it or not. A good way to ease this, aside from being prepared and organized, is to take a field trip to the school beforehand. This is especially helpful to younger children and those entering a new school, to help them become better acquainted with their teacher and surroundings ahead of time.

Organization

The last thing you want is to be running around the house with your head cut off as you're trying to get everything together at the last minute. Instead, prepare backpacks a few days before school begins in order to keep the night before the first day as stress-free as possible.

After School Begins

Get everything together the night before. Pack and label lunches and choose tomorrow's outfit. Your older children can do this themselves, of course. But preparing the night before can really help make school mornings flow a lot more smoothly.
