Back to school shopping on a budget can be a challenge unless you know how. By visiting flea markets, discount stores, yard sales, and even department stores when they have sales, you can save a lot of money. Here is a list on places that will be invaluable if you are back to school shopping on a budget.
Discount stores. These include different types of stores such as close-out department stores and dollar stores. Here you can find things to organize a dorm room, school supplies, and decorations. You may even be able to find some clothes. The stock changes constantly so if you want to save some money by visiting these discount stores you may want to visit more than once.
Flea markets. The items you can find at a flea market will really depend on how big it is and what the vendors are selling that day. In any case, you can find anything from clothes and accessories to school supplies. If you do manage to find the things you need, they are probably really inexpensive.
Yard sales. Yard sales are a good place to go to do some back to school shopping. Most usually have home decorations and furniture and even clothes. Yard sales are fun because you can negotiate the price and usually find quality items for inexpensive prices.
Online. It is a well known fact that campus book stores charge a lot of money for their books. Check online auction sites and online book stores before you purchase your books from the campus store. You may be able to save a lot of money, especially if you can find it used.
Sales. Back to school items regularly go on sale at the regular stores. If you would like to save some money but generally want new things, this is the avenue you should take. Pay close attention to the circulars and make sure you only buy items you need. Back to school shopping at sales only works out if you buy an item you truly need. Sales can be trapped because it is easy to buy something just because it's on sale.

I am a parent with a tight budget and not a lot of time. Going around to all of the different yard sales, flea markets, etc for BTS stuff for the kids is impossible! For clothes, I go to my local resale store, Children's Orchard. The clothes are in great shape, I am reusing, and the clothes are "new" to the kids because they came from a store, not a flea market or yard sale. It helps trim my clothing budget because I don't have to wait for a sale. Then I can concentrate on saving the most on school supplies.
