Glue and crayons are items used by the lower grades. Try purchasing smaller bottles of glue and small-sized crayons. Kids don't need jumbo size supplies because they either get lost or take up too much room. The desks in elementary and middle grades are small and don't hold much.
When buying school clothes remember to purchase items that follow the school dress code. This tip may apply more to older children, but what works at home wont work at school. Things to consider are offensive material written on clothes, length of shirts and skirts, low-cut tops, items that are too tight, etc. For smaller children make sure to buy clothes that are mess-friendly as kids usually spill or play and get stains on things.
Avoid plastic scissors because they don't cut well. Make sure to see if you need to purchase right-handed or left-handed scissors. Teach your child scissor safety before school starts.
Velcro straps used to bind books are good for school aged children. Backpacks are usually placed in a cubby or hung on a ring, so straps can help your child carry their books. The velcro straps are great for any age!
Buy socks that are from the same brand and/or color. Laundry can be a hassle with multiple colors and decorations for socks. Same time and just purchase simple socks.
Buy in bulk during this time as things will be on sale. Snacks and items to pack lunches or after school snacks are great to buy in bulk. Pencils, paper, erasers, and other things that will be used later in the year can be purchased now.
Try and let kids choose the school supplies they like. Colors, design, and other small details help the child to become excited about school. Try and choose two and suggest the child to choose the one they prefer to move things along at a fast pace.
Backpacks and lunch boxes should be bought according to quality. These items take a good amount of abuse during the year. Save money by buying what the current trend is. Make sure the lunch box and backpack can easily be opened by the child.
Buy shoes according to function and not appeal. A small child needs a comfort, active friendly, easy to clean type of shoe. Make sure to purchase extra shoelaces too.
Avoid the back to school rush by starting your conquest a little early. Shopping in the wee hours of the morning is also a good idea, as most people like to sleep in. Get ready for the school season!
