Back to School Supplies: What You Should Have

Painfully Common Things Simply Forgotten About Each Year

Kyle S.
It's that time of year again to start getting the kids ready for school already but are your kids fully prepared? One of the best ways to start a new year off on any grade level is by making sure they have the proper equipment and supplies. I don't know how many times I've seen teachers upset when having a kid ask to borrow a pencil on the first day.

One item your children should already have is obviously a backpack so that shouldn't have to be mentioned. It's good to get on the teacher's good side early on and by having some of these all-important everyday items, your children can do just that.

Some of these are going to be painfully obvious but even the most prepared parents can forget the bare essentials such as pencils. Do everything you can to ensure you kid has pencils with him or her as they venture off to school. Keeping extras in their backpacks is another great idea because if they forget one, they will know where to get a backup instead of asking to borrow one.

Erasers aren't as big a deal since pencils come equipped with one but some kids like having bigger separate erasers so always stock up on those as well. Pens are also important for the book reports or other important papers that you have to do in ink. Always make sure to get pens with black ink even though some teachers will take blue ink but black definitely looks more professional.

Creative supplies are more required in earlier years instead of high school so this next one really applies to elementary kids and maybe some middle school students. Glue and scissors are usually recommended in elementary school they are just something good to have around the house as well for homework and other projects your kids may bring home. Stick glue can work just as good as regular glue most the time and it has half the mess but this is more of a parent or teacher preference.

Rulers are another essential tool used in the classroom but most schools will provide rulers when needed. In past experiences I've seen schools that were short on rulers and kids had to pair up to use them. To avoid this kind of thing, pick up some rulers for your kids just to be safe.

So far I've put down some of the really obvious things every student should have but as they get older, you will be having to get more of the same and some other items you may or may not have needed in the past. One thing that every student regardless of age should have is a notebook and binder. This provides easy access to taking notes and taking down homework details instead of searching around the classroom for it or having to "borrow" some from someone around them.

Binders and notebooks are mostly required for middle school and high school students and of course college students. Maybe not required for elementary school but a very good idea. Another item that should be used for students of all ages is a book cover. You can make these out of paper bags or just buy some at your local dollar store so you don't scuff up or destroy any expensive schoolbooks.

For high school students, items such as calculators and protractors are also great ideas and usually required ones as well. Most schools I've been to normally provided calculators and we made our own protractors before but sometimes it's nicer just to have your own stuff. Calculators are good on any age level but for high school kids, graphing calculators are usually better. In most cases these are provided but we also have to pair up to use these one time, which is really annoying. You can save your kid some trouble by getting the their own but they can be pretty pricey too.

These are all pretty much basic items for students from elementary school to high school. There are still some items that can offer a convenience but these are pretty much your bare essential items ever student should have when heading back to school and should have all year long. The next step is making sure they do their homework.
