Back to School Tips in Seattle

College- or wide-ruled? Backpack or messenger bag? Custom book covers or grocery bags? There are lots of decisions to make when kids go back to school, but the start of a new semester doesn't have to drain your bank account or give you an ulcer. If you live in the Seattle area, follow these tips for an easy, inexpensive transition from summer vacation to school.

Hit the Mall

There are a few outlet shops in Seattle, but the best bargains are often found at the mall. Westfield, for example, has a JC Penny, Sears, Macy's, and Nordstrom, where you can stock up on new outfits and shoes for the kids. Just make sure to watch for the sales so you know you're getting the best price.

Sign up at department store web sites to receive coupons via e-mail or postal mail. This can help bring down the cost of back to school shopping without having to run all over town looking for the cheapest stores and boutiques.

End the Summer on a High Note

Summers are often filled with day camps, overnight camps, sports practices, and other commitments that leave precious little time for family bonding. As the summer reaches an end and you're getting ready to go back to school, organize a last hurrah.

Choose a fun local attraction that might have become part of the background noise in Seattle. An afternoon at the Washington Park Arboretum, for example, is completely free, and gives you an opportunity to enjoy the last vestiges of warm weather.

Sort Through School Supplies

It's easy to run out and purchase all new back to school supplies for your kids, but this wastes money if you haven't taken inventory at home. Make a list of all the leftover school supplies your kids brought home at the end of last year so you don't buy duplicates.

If you have school supplies that your kids can no longer use, consider donating them, and take your kids along so they learn how it feels to give back to the community. Seattle Education Access, for instance, is always in need of office and school supplies, books, and other items.

Familiarize Yourself with the School

Most Seattle schools now have web sites where you can learn about the teachers, classes, clubs, administrators, and upcoming events. You might also be able to download school supply lists, forms, waivers, and any other documents you might need to get your child ready to go back to school.

For example, the West Seattle High School web site offers teacher profiles, a calendar of events, and plenty of other useful information for high school students and their parents. You can also find out information about their Homework Club.

Fill Out Forms

Visit the Seattle Public Schools web site to download forms your child might need when he or she starts back to school. From the Internet Opt-Out form to medical reports and requests, it's much easier to get that information online.

Start Buying Sports Equipment

Sports are offered at most Seattle schools, but participation in those organizations costs money. If your child is interested in playing a sport, start looking for deals on sports equipment now, from lacrosse sticks to football pads. And ask coaches for suggestions on where to shop so you get the best deals.
