Kelsey Grammar stars as Chuck Darling a news anchor returning to Pittsburgh where he began his career. Patricia Heaton is the co-anchor Kelly Clark that he left behind ten years ago. He had headed on to bigger and better things but it wasn't meant to be. Now after being fired from a job in Las Angeles after an on air cursing session he is back at News 9 and in store for a surprise.
The news director Ryan Church is a young 26 and hyper to boot. When Chuck first comes in and tells him to park his car Ryan tells him he is the News Director. Chucks reply is simply to repeat telling him to park his car again. The young director is not at all impressive to his newest cast member. Kelly Clark comes in pretending she has hit a black convertible just to make Chuck upset.
There is a weather girl by the name of Montana Diez Herrera that attempts to make nice with Chuck by baking Pistachio cookies. He is allergic to pistachios, an allergy that he shares with Kelly's ten year old daughter.
The two begin to talk about what has happened during the last ten years. Kelly tells Chuck that she is divorced and has an eight year old daughter named Gracie. Then the two go on air and somewhere in the middle for no apparent reason Kelly loses it. Then she disappears for a while and people begin to worry more and more as it gets closer to air time.
The young news director freaks out every time he is told how close to air time they are. Then he sees a saving grace coming toward him.
Gary Crezyzewski is on his way to do a remote in from of a deserted court house in a rain storm when he is told he may have to fill in for Kelly because it is almost time to air and she is not back yet. Just as he is suited up and calling his wife he gets the news that she has returned.
Toward the middle of the show it is revealed that the two slept together on New Years Eve before he left. Chuck decides that this is why Kelly had a tantrum earlier. She informs him that he is full of himself and that she is not upset about that. It was New Years Eve and she was drunk. That had been the day that she did Tequila shots and went through a driving course for the show. She reassures him that she is not in love with him.
Then right before they are scheduled to go on air Kelly receives a call from her daughter. Then he is told the little girl is ten years old and Kelly had gotten married after she was born. She had also told the rest of the crew that she had went to a sperm bank.
A light bulb goes off in Chuck's head when he begins his commentary on what he has been doing during the last ten years. He begins to count and consider the possibility that the little daughter Kelly told him about is his. He is so nervous that when he is interrupted by Kelly to tell him that a warehouse fire is headed for St. John's Children's Hospital he accidentally shows relief.
Chuck wants to know if he is a father so he shows up at Kelly's front door. At first he gets a rather theatrical yes followed by denial. Then a phone call comes in that Gracie is on her way home to pick up something she left. Kelly protest telling her that she will bring it to her and when she can't talk her out of coming home she asks Chuck to leave. He quickly and accurately comes to the conclusion that she does not want him to see the little girl because he'd know.
Defeated Kelly finally tells Chuck that he is Gracie's father and he agrees not to tell the little girl. She shows up unaware of anything that is going on.
The end of the show is Chuck calling to tell Kelly that their daughter is amazing. So what is next? Will Kelly let Chuck be involved in their daughter's life? Will she tell her who her father is? Will these two end up with more than just a professional relationship? While Chuck reminded Kelly that they had chemistry on screen and off it was clear that there is chemistry between Kelsey Grammar and Patricia Heaton that will keep the audience coming back if they are provided with the story lines.
