Lose Weight by Learning from Past Mistakes

M. Hughes
From September 2007 to about June 2008, I lost nearly 50 pounds with Weight Watchers. I was 10 pounds away from my goal. And then I stopped going. Why? I guess I thought I would be okay on my own. In my mind, I was ready to fly solo. I was wrong.

I have gained it all back, plus 3. To get back on track, I need to start by facing the mistakes I made last time around.

#1 - I lost weight by eating "diet" foods. I ate ww meals, I ate lean pockets, etc. Very rarely did I allow myself to cook and eat real, fresh food. It was all about seeing the points values on a box, and buying that. THIS TIME, I am not eating that stuff. I will not eat "diet" food! I am going to make my food with real ingredients, and learn to eat in a way that can become a lifestyle, not just a short-lived diet.

#2 - I did not exercise that much. I was losing weight by eating within my points, and here and there, I would exercise for a week. Physical fitness is important, and being at a low weight does not mean that I am healthy all around. THIS TIME I will exercise regularly. I will start slow and work my way up. I will seek support from my husband, who has agreed to be my workout buddy. I need to make exercise a part of my LIFE, not a part of my DIET!

#3 - I hid from my mistakes. When I was going to ww meetings, I would only go if I was very confident that I had lost weight. On the day of my weigh in (it was Mondays at 5:30pm that I was weighing in), I would not eat until getting off the scale (meaning, I would not eat all day). Psychotic, in retrospect...I mean, not eating until 7pm once a week is not a good lifestyle choice. Also, not accepting plateaus or missteps along the way is not a healthy way to live. THIS TIME, I will weigh and track my weight NO MATTER WHAT! I am not going to hide because I gained a pound or two - I need to accept the fact that not every week will be perfect, and that is OK!

The roller coaster stops here. Never give up!
