Backpacking the Trails with Your Baby

Timmy Scott
Hiking and backpacking are great activities for the family. Many times, the very younger generation gets left at grandma's house, a day care or with a friend. Still, there are some couples that enjoy taking their babies with them as they journey through God's wilderness. You are a family. Share the gift of nature as a family.

Many young couples will use a frontal child carrier while toting a large backpack. Some couples will share the work load of carrying the baby as they go. They will alternate at carrying the baby with them. Taking a baby with you isn't that much of a burden if you prepare properly. That is the key. Backpacking with a baby isn't for everyone or every baby as far is that is concerned. You must first make sure that it is safe for your baby to travel with you. Never take the baby out if they have been sick.

Here are some tips for helping you if you do decide to take the baby along on your journey.

Reduce your expectations. don't plan on covering as many miles a day or staying that extra night if you are camping. the more weight you have to carry, the less miles you should hike.

Be prepared. Always expect the unexpected. This can mean anything from weather problems to injuries. Carry some Baby Tylenol with you. Have a first aid kit for scratches and stings.

Bring along extra friends. especially if they have a strong back. Trading off carrying duties will keep your group refreshed.

Have the right gear. This might mean spending a few extra bucks for other things. Sometimes trekking poles can help for stability. Have a bag that is easy to handle but, doesn't weigh a lot.

Use cotton diapers. You can always wash them out with water and let the sun dry them out. the sun is great for killing odors. If you have disposable diapers, be sure to discard them properly.

Plan on you and the baby getting dirty. You will wash up rather easily so don't fight it.

Don't leave out open food that will attract animals.

Stick to the trail. Most trails have been made for the purpose of foot travel. It just makes it easier when you have so much to carry.

Load up on small favors. Small extras like power bars, juices, toilet paper, matches, towels, knives, a small stuffed animal or toy to keep the child happy always helps.

Extra garbage bags. They store easily and can be used for many things.

Start young. You will gain experience each time out.

Get into shape. If you plan to do this, start early with some weight lifting or general fitness exercises.

Carry a charged up cellphone for emergencies.

Carry a battery-powered light.

Enjoy the effort that you put in. Take pictures of your journey with your baby. There will be challenges for you but, in the end could be worth while.

Pace yourself. Don't overdo it.

Always let people know where you are going and when they can expect you to return. Leave your cellphone number with them.

Backpacking with a baby is a great way for a young couple to spend quality time as a family in mother natures theater. With the proper planning and carrying procedures, you can have a great time. Always try to help each other out by giving directions along the way for obstacles that may get in the way of the hiker with the baby.
