Backyard Barbecue: Why is Grilling Out one of America's Favorite Pastimes?

What Smells so Good?

Barbecuing is a slow method of cooking food over direct heat often with smoke. Over 90% of American families will attend one BBQ this summer. That tells you right there barbecuing is popular, but why is it so popular? In this article we will look at why barbecuing is so popular.

Barbecuing is a part of summertime in America. In warmer climate areas people barbecue year round. Many parties are thrown outdoors with the barbecue as the focal point.

Barbecuing allows you to create a meal that is different than any other kind of cooking. The grilled taste and smell of good barbecued food is hard to beat!

A variety of meats and side dishes are useful when barbecuing. Traditionally, families cook beef, fish, and pork when they grill. When you shop at your grocery store look for meats that are specifically cut and packaged for barbecuing.

Some items like brats and hotdogs are easy to grill and may already be cooked which makes it even easier. You can add spices and marinate food to add more flavor as well.

Traditional side dishes include coleslaw, beans, potato salad, and chips. These sides work well with almost any kind of meat and are easy to prepare and keep fresh until it is time to eat. Throw in ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions and relish and you have an easy meal to prepare with a great taste.

Different types of grills will present various types of flavors. Charcoal and smoker grills offer a natural "smoked" flavor which is one of the best known flavors of barbecuing. Smokers even allow you to produce slight changes in the favor of the meat by using different types of woods. Propane grills allow you to cook quicker and still have a great grilled flavor.

You will be able to cook your whole meal on the grill if you plan correctly. Some gas grills even contain a Wok type surface for cooking pasta and rise dishes, or a full rotisserie set that allows you to cook rotisserie chicken.

Some grills come with many different types of cooking surfaces. These include a ribbed grill, a flat grill and BBQ surface. Some grills have none stick surfaces which allow you to cook foods that you would not be able to cook on a grill otherwise such as fish.

Another reason barbecuing is so popular is the fact that it gives you a reason to have a party. Throw in a few fun games like volleyball and horseshoes and everyone can have a great time outdoors together.

Barbecuing is popular because it can be considered a hobby as well. As you get better at it you will find yourself experimenting with different recipes and ways to cook your food.

These are a few reasons barbecuing has become so popular. Be careful and enjoy yourself when you have your next get together.
