Backyard Landscaping Ideas to Suit Your Needs and Lifestyle

Ideas to Make Your Yard Work for You, Even If You Don't Want to Work in Your Yard

Backyard landscaping can be as simple or complex as the people living in the house. Before starting a landscaping project for your backyard, you need to have an idea of how you will be using the backyard. Will you be entertaining? Do you have kids that want to play? Another thing to consider is how much time you are willing to spend taking care of the backyard. How you landscape your backyard can make a big difference in the value of your home.

Before you start thinking of ideas for your backyard landscape, decide how you plan on using the yard. If you have young kids you probably will want grass so they can play. You also need to be careful of safety. A pond or a fire pit can be extremely dangerous for a young child. If you plan on entertaining, you will need lots of room for people to sit and socialize. If you like to garden, section off a piece of your yard to show off your green thumb.

Kid Friendly Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Backyard landscaping for kids can be simple. A large grass area will provide a place for tag, football games and tea parties. A nice idea is to frame the yard with concrete curbing and fill the outside with rock. You can have the concrete dyed to match whatever color you choose. The curbing can also be angled so it is easier to mow. No more pushing the lawn mower up to the wall, just mow up to the curbing and be done.

If your children have grass allergies, artificial grass might be the answer. This synthetic grass looks and feels like the real thing. No more mowing or watering and your yard will always look good.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas for Entertaining

The backyard, if landscaped right, can be an extension of your living space. If you love to BBQ then a built in barbeque is a must. Your backyard barbeque can be basic, with just a grill or can be as complex as a whole outdoor kitchen. Basic options include adding a sink, refrigerator and stove top. The sky and your pocket is the limit for other add-ons such as a wine chiller, a smoker and a vent.

Another backyard landscaping idea is to add a fire pit. Imagine your guests all seated around the fire sipping wine and having a good time. Having kids doesn't mean you can't have a fire pit, but you need to make it safe. There are lids that can be purchased that cover up the fire pit when not in use to keep from prying little fingers. A stone bench or some other seating is a good idea to add a finishing touch to your backyard landscape.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas for Gardeners

Backyard landscaping for the gardener can mean a small section of ground set aside just for them. Frame the garden area with a small white picket fence to help hide the garden when nothing is growing. If you have a small yard, or the yard has already been landscaped and you don't want to tear it out, container gardening might be a good idea. By using containers a gardener can grow what they want, where they want and the best thing is they don't have to worry about weeds.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas for Small Yards

If you have a small backyard, don't despair. You can have a nicely landscaped yard by following a few simple ideas. Think vertical. Plants can be hung in pots on the walls to provide you with extra space. Simple is best for small yards. Dwarf trees offer the small backyard owner the option of adding trees to the landscape, without overpowering the yard.

Additional Ideas for Backyard Landscaping

Statues are an appealing backyard landscaping option. They can be whimsical like a garden gnome, to Zen like with an Asian tea house. Don't forget scent when you think of your backyard landscaping. Night blooming Jasmine is a wonderful way to add a calming scent to your yard. Roses are another idea.

Backyard landscaping should reflect the people who plan on using it. What you want to do in your yard should be the first thing you think about when deciding on landscaping. Write down your ideas. You might not be able to turn your backyard into your dream overnight. But by writing down your ideas, you can create a wish list that will help you get there eventually.
