Bacon and Eggs Verses Egg Beaters and Turkey Bacon
Why You Will Be Shocked to Discover Which is the Healthier Option
Turkey Bacon or Pork Bacon?
In a taste test, hands down Pork bacon takes the lead! Bacon has had it's fair share of "hate crimes" committed against it. So if you thought switching to Turkey Bacon would be a better option with a less better taste - you were wrong! No, I am serious here. According to David Zinczenko and Matt Gouding, Authors of Eat This Not That - Turkey Bacon is the less healthy option to Pork Bacon. Not only do the nutrition labels match almost identically (including calories and saturated fat!) but the Turkey Bacon has MORE unhealthy sodium. So keep the bacon - pork and let the turkey be...well a turkey! This of course doesn't glorify bacon. It still should be kept to a minimum. But WOOHOO what a relief that real bacon can still be enjoyed on occasion!
Eggs or Egg Beaters? (egg substitutes)
Somewhere along the food hate crimes, the egg was falsely accused of deteriorating ones health. Yes, we all heard the studies in the early 80's and 90's about how the egg can clog arteries, raise cholesterol, and have obscene amounts of not so good fats. So in comes the Egg Beaters to the rescue, right! WRONG. Egg Beaters are not your night in shining armor. In fact, according to Harvard Health Publications - Harvard Medical School, "Eggs are a good source of nutrients. One egg contains 6 grams of protein and some healthful unsaturated fats. Eggs are also a good source of choline, which has been linked with preserving memory, and lutein and zeaxanthin, which may protect against vision loss." They also state that eating an egg a day is perfectly healthy! So good-bye Egg Beaters - Hello, Egg!
Wheat Rolls or White Rolls?
Okay, this is a trick question - neither! If you are spending extra bucks on those honey wheat rolls for your sandwiches and burgers than you have been tricked. What you are ultimately looking for is "100% WHOLE wheat" if it just says wheat, it's still enriched, and even possibly bleached just like white rolls. The kicker here is the honey wheat rolls actually contain MORE calories and are amazingly worse for you since it is just a white roll disguised! Avoid white rolls as well and opt for labels that state "100% whole wheat" and unbleached. If the label says enriched - drop it like it's hot!
So on your quest for health, you can relax. You won't be a turkey bacon eating, egg beaters in the morning on a honey wheat roll kind of person. Nope, you'll be able to appreciate the health benefits of eggs, allow yourself that piece (or two) of bacon, and eat whole grains that truly help battle the bulge! Good luck and God bless!
