Baconnaise and Bacon Salt: Bacon Fans Rejoice

Sunny DuLane
If you're a bacon fan, then you're going to be thrilled with the latest products from two entrepreneurs,Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow. The two guys have indulged their passion for bacon in a variety of bacon flavored salts and most recently a bacon flavored mayonnaise.

The company Bacon Salt (also known as J & D Foods) started in late 2007 and since then has sold more bacon flavored goodness with annual sales over $1.4 million dollars last year. The original bacon salt products come in three standard flavors original smokey bacon, hickory bacon and peppered bacon salt. The bacon salts can be used on anything you'd like to have bacon flavor like eggs, meat, potatoes, vegetables or whatever strikes your taste buds. There are also special limited edition flavors such as applewood, maple, cheddar, jalapeno and mesquite. Best news of all for those who want bacon flavor-the bacon salt is low sodium, zero fat, vegetarian and kosher certified. The Bacon Salts are available nationally at major food stores and in many restaurants. They also can be ordered online.

The early growth of the company was funded in a rather unusual way. Dave's son Dean was in a featured video which won $5,000 on America's Funniest Video. And as the rest they say is bacon flavor history.

The company J and D foods has expanded their product selections to bacon flavored lip balm. For bacon fans, they won't have to wait for bacon taste, it'll be on their lips all the time. The latest product is Baconnaise. Baconnaise is a mix of bacon flavor and mayonnaise. It can be used as a sandwich spread, instead of mayonnaise in recipes when you want a bacon kick. Or how about not having to wait to fry the bacon for a BLT? You just grab bread, tomatoes, lettuce and Baconnaise. Spread the Baconnaise and enjoy a BLT without the hassle.

For those people who've had to cut back on bacon due to cholesterol concerns and who have not been satisfied with turkey bacon these products offer a choice. According to the nutritional information on the J and D Foods website Baconnaise is roughly the same (minus 10 calories as mayonnaise.) But if you choose the lite Baconnaise option, then the calories and total fat are 1/3 that of regular mayonnaise with no saturated fats. For those counting carbohydrates there is 1 gm of carbohydrates.

After seeing the product on several television shows I tried the bacon salt at home. Our household hasn't had real bacon served here in years. Sigh....but our family loved the taste. So far we have tried the original on scrambled eggs, macaroni and cheese and the hickory flavor on chicken sandwiches. We did discover one drawback, too much equals a very salty bacon flavor. The Bacon Salts have been a hit on everything we've used it on. My local grocery isn't carrying Baconnaise yet, so I'm placing an order online. This family may never use turkey bacon again.
