Bad Gifts to Buy a Man this Holiday Season

It's Not Always the Thought that Counts

David Edwards
Christmas time is here and everyone is scrambling to get the perfect gift for that special someone. We spend time combing eBay and shopping malls, hoping and praying that when the time comes, we will know. The motto of Christmas is, "It's the thought that counts." Despite that, there are a few taboo gifts that women should stay away from; if they want their man to stay.

Speaking from personal experience, I can say I have received some very horrible gifts over the years. My girlfriend had purchased an Alan Jackson t-shirt for me. When I asked her why Alan Jackson, she said, "You had a CD from him." The CD in question was one that I had bought for my father, who is a big fan of the man. I abhor country music and when I refused to wear the shirt it became a very large issue for her. Needless to say, we didn't last very long after that. Ladies, if you are going to buy a musician's t-shirt for your boyfriend, make sure he likes that musician.

The next terrible gift I was forced to accept was a book. It wasn't an ordinary book either. It was a "spice up your sex life" type book. The problem was that we had no sex life. She wasn't ready and I respected that. When I told a friend about the book, she told me it was a signal and to "go for it". When I finally had the opportunity, she broke up with me for being too pushy. So here's my next worst gift idea: don't send signals. If we get them right everything is good, but if we get them wrong and guys, let's be honest, we get them wrong a lot, then we're in the dog house with no Scooby Snacks.

Now, I don't have anymore personal horror stories to tell, but I browsed a few websites, such as Overstock and I found some things that should have never been created. The one that made me twitch the most was a set of cuff links. These were glass and had just about ever color imaginable on them. They were over half off, 58% to be exact, but they were horrible. I can't imagine any suit that I or another member of my sex would ever wear unless he was trying to look like a rainbow. Now, ladies, when it comes to clothing accessories, let us dress ourselves. A t-shirt or jeans is usually good for clothes, but stay away from rings, earrings, or anything that sparkles. Every man has his own tastes when it comes to these things and unless you have known each other a long time, you will most likely end up wasting your hard earned money.

Now my last not-to-do suggestion was rainbow cuff links. When I thought about it, something I would never ever want for Christmas is anything pink. I shudder of the thought. Most men are taught to think of pink as Kryptonite and I am like most men in that way. So anything pink, pink hoodies, pink shirts, anything pink is taboo, unless your boyfriend actually into the whole idea of "only a real man wears pink". Write it down, get a tattoo, it doesn't matter as long as you remember: no pink.

Perhaps the worst gift of all is the situation where you're uncomfortable, on edge, and possibly homicidal. I'm talking about surprise visits from family members that you can't stand. We all have that one family member that makes a good situation bad or a bad situation horrible. Whether it's from your family or his, the worst thing a girlfriend can do to her boyfriend is make them spend extended time with this person. So I'm begging all women for all men, always tell us about family visits beforehand. Never surprise us with our parents for Christmas. It is the absolute worst gift imaginable.

Now ladies, if you stay away from these five don't items, your holiday season will be much happier and less stressful. These five are the worst gift ideas that I could come up with, however every man is different. Talk to your man and really listen. It will make Christmas and your relationship in general much easier.
