Bad Hair Days Begone

A Useful Hair Accessory that Can Be Used to Banish Bad Hair Days

Annette Robbins
Rare is the female that has not experienced the BHD blues more commonly known as "bad hair day". We wake up expectantly to a new day, gaze bleary eyed into the mirror, half knowing what we will see but holding out hope that hair mussed will transition magically to hair beautiful. Alas, we all recognize the signs and symptoms of the BHD syndrome: deflated coiffures, frizzy ends, hair strands defiantly standing on end completely rebellious to accepting authority of comb or brush. So, some of us spring into action and reach for the ever present scarf to adroitly wrap around our hair, others grab the nearest cap or beret while still others feverishly wind their hair in a scrunchy or hair band to gain some semblance of control and acceptability over our untamed locks. We can all agree that emotionally BHD is the pits and usually asserts itself on a day when a significant event is to occur, like an interview for that dream job or the much publicized presentation before your colleagues.

Well, ladies, weep no more. No longer does our hair have mastery over us, living a life of its own. There is a remedy! Ever heard of Hot Water Curlers? If not, you are not alone. None of my friends or co workers were aware of this product nor did they know the hot water curlers are the answer to BHD. I truly believe the Goddess of Beautiful Tresses smiled upon us when this product was sent to market.

What is a Hot Water Curler, you ask? Well, it is a plastic cylindrically shaped curler that contains a gel within the curler. The gel holds the heat and holds the secret of its success. How does it work you dubiously inquire? There are two ways one can use the Hot Water Curlers. Place the curlers in a pot of boiling water and let boil for 3-4 minutes and then carefully remove the curlers, shaking off excess moisture and set your hair. Leave the curlers in for about 10-15 minutes or until you have the desired curl. The longer the curler stays in your hair, the tighter the curl; less time yields a looser curl.

The alternate method, which is the one I have found to be successful for me, is to to cover the curlers with water in a microwaveable plastic tray or bowl, microwave for approximately 3-4 minutes, depending upon your microwave heat intensity. (Note: Whatever method you choose, do not boil the clamps that come with the curlers). Drain the water, shake off the excess moisture and curl your sectioned hair. Remove the curlers after 10-15 minutes or so according to your preference. During the time the curlers are in your hair, you can continue with your daily routine. The length of time to curl your hair depends of course on hair length. When the time has elapsed, remove the curlers and style hair as desired. The curlers can be purchased in packs of 12, either small or medium size, 3/4 " or 1". The price is reasonable between $5.99-$6.99. I have not seen them for sale in stores but I ordered the curlers from www.carolwrightgifts.com and they can be ordered from www.DrLeonards.com. I was informed by the manufacturer that Starcrest can be contacted at 1-909-657-2793 for order information.

I recommend the Hot Water Curlers because it is a fast, easy way to curl your hair and the style can last a few days, eliminating the need for daily use. Because the heat comes from within the gel infused curler, I believe that it does a more effective job of curling than electric rollers which cool quickly in comparison to the Hot Water Curlers. I find that it works well on all types of hair including permed hair, Afro American hair and fine to medium hair, short to shoulder length. I do not know if thick. coarse or extremely long hair would be suitable for Hot Water Curlers. If desired, you can roll certain sections of your hair that need a curl rather than rolling all of your hair.

Applying styling gel to your hair before curling works well. In hot, humid weather, applying a scanty amount of hair wax to the curler before rolling the hair adds sheen and body without giving a greasy look. As with any heated hair accessory, caution should be taken to avoid scalp burns and I do not recommend it for use on children.

To maintain the hairstyle after using the Hot Water Curlers, sleep on a silk, not imitation, pillowcase. I found that it is true that the satin pillowcase does keep your style intact and does not cause your hair to break off or become frizzy as can happen with cotton pillowcases. WWW.Shopsatin.com is a website that offers a variety of colors and sizes of satin pillowcases and they are of excellent quality. Try the Hot Water Curlers, bid adieu to bad hair days and enjoy the freedom of beautifully coiffed hair.
