Bad Product Review: Walmart's Outdoor Portable Charcoal Barbecue Grill Manufactured by Blue-Rhino Corporation
Hi! This is Phillip Chambley! Former 5 year market research interviewer and also author of the famous worldwide "Secrets of Paid Online Surveys ebook" (secretsofsurveys.com). I am always searching for products that actually "work and don't work?"
I am completely astonished and truly amazed that Walmart would sell or even test out a product that does NOT work to begin with. (At this particular time in history, Walmart stores are the leading retailers of just about any merchandise worldwide for all consumers).
My wife and I decided to go for a pleasant afternoon picnic at Lake Alatoona here in N.W. Metro-Atlanta on this date and time. So we stopped by Walmart and purchased one of these small portable grills, which also includes the "no lighter fluid needed charcoal" Wow! to our surprise this charcoal and even the paper bag did NOT light and or ignite no matter what we tried? "I could have used a flame torch and these coals or bag would have never burned!"
After we removed the grill from the cellophane packaging, we tried to light the paper bag at all (4) four corners as noted in the simple easy to read instructions. This did not work using a brand new Bic cigarette lighter. We tried placing a highly flammable paper napkin over the bag and it still did not light or ignite?
Then we tried placing the same flammable paper napkins underneath this so-called highly flammable paper bag which enclosed the charcoals. The paper napkins burned just fine, but the bag did NOT. (This bag looks like it may have been over-printed using a non-flammable coating substance called lacquer).
Then we tried using a brand new newspaper covering to ignite or light the bag with, this did not work. As a last resort? We took these charcoal briquettes out of the bag, placed them inside the portable grill and tried lighting them using this brand new Bic cigarette lighter. However?
This did not work also! We then proceeded and spreaded a paper napkin across the approx. 25-30 charcoals. The napkin burned perfectly, but the charcoals did NOT. (This is a faster method for no lighter fluid required charcoal briquettes).
We then took all of these ironically "cold" charcoals out of the grill and placed down some paper napkins inside this small portable grill and then placed these small 3 inch black charcoal briquettes with a paper napkin(s) underneath and on top and lit it!
The paper napkins burned just fine, but the coals were not even phased in this highly flammable heating process? (I honestly believe this bag and the inside charcoals were treated with a flame-retardant substance. Why? I do not understand?).
At this point? This is absolutely ridiculous! Have the purchasers of Walmart industries or even the seller to Walmart called Blue-Rhino ever tried this product? Most likely NO! Unfortunately, because of the nature of this $6.00 USD product, most consumers would not even consider or taking the time for a refund, simply because of it's filthy and dirty used product at any Walmart USA location.
Walmart has always had the best cheap quality products or merchandise worldwide, placing many K-Mart stores out of business because of their quality products and or merchandise. After my wife and I got completely frustrated? I had to take the time and get in my car and drive approx. 3 miles to the nearest Lake Alatoona store and literally buy some local expensive charcoal starting fluid.
I then completely soaked (more than normal) the black charcoal briquettes with this highly flammable brand name Gulf charcoal starting fluid in this small portable grill. Naturally the grill turned into gigantic flames after lighting! Nearly causing the nearby trees to catch on fire, because the flame was so high!
Believe it or NOT? After (30) thirty minutes of this huge flame, which finally subsided, still there were at least 5-6 charcoals that still would not light or ignite no matter what we tried? My wife said "I'm hungry! I am ready to cook the food no mater how many coals are burning?" So we lowered the metal grill and cooked with the remaining slow-burning coals.
The food tasted okay, but was not up to standard outdoor charcoal cooking. Probably because we had to remove all of the paper burning products used in this non-flammable ironically flame-retardant charcoal process included in this easy-to-use grill purchase!
Please Note: In the past we have never had any problems with these small portable outdoor grills, normally purchased at Kroger, Publix or Walmart, which includes the charcoal "no lighter fluid needed". I would personally steer away from this particular product, especially if you are in a hurry and looking for a fast small peaceful outdoor cooking experience, simply because you just don't want to load up the big-home charcoal grill and take it with you on this simple afternoon occasion.
My advice is to always use the famous "Kingsford Matchlight" charcoal using the no lighter fluid required at anytime. After over 40 years of outdoor charcoal grill cooking. This particular product is the best! Simply because it lights and is ready to use within (20) twenty minutes or sooner.
Each charcoal burns precisely at the same rate at approx. 2-3 hours or so, giving your food a total great taste, no matter whether it may be a hamburger, pork chops, or chicken. Be sure to always use KC Masterpiece sauce for the best barbecue taste here in the USA! (These manufacturers did not pay me to write this article).
Unfortunately? Because of the dangerous nature of this Walmart product. Market research focus groups were NOT allowed to preview this particular product, which product/merchandise buyers of Walmart, Kroger, and possibly Publix grocery stores solely depend on.
They depend on the manufacturers "word only" regarding cheap explosive items, which sometimes are over-looked in the process because of so many lawsuits. It's obvious? This product was manufactured/produced and marketed using false advertisement for buyers of these particular stores.
I have personally contacted Walmart regarding this incident and or product concern. They will most likely over-look this reported product/incident simply because they receive so many consumer/customer bogus complaints on a daily basis.
My personal advice as a market research advocate, do not complain about any merchandise or product until you have thoroughly researched and are completely 100% positive this purchased item does NOT work. This cuts down on customer service phone and email problems. I can honestly say as a consumer "this product does not work!"
