To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't look as good in it as Cher does at 64: "I'm the oldest chick with the biggest hair in the littlest costume," Cher quipped. "Back in the day, I used to get thrown off MTV for wearing things like this that seem so tame now. That's when Lady Gaga was Baby Gaga."
Cher was a bit under-dressed compared to Lady Gaga this year, but speaking of repeat outfits, Lady Gaga arrived on the white carpet at the 2010 VMAs wearing a gold, red and deep green Alexander McQueen dress, with feathers on a head of long white hair with aqua blue tips on the ends.
I thought she was going for the peacock look, but I was informed by a teen that peacocks are more colorful and this was more of a "turkey" look. Lady Gaga wore this same outfit in her September photo shoot in Vanity Fair.
When the VMAs began, it started out with a "Bad Romance" number that was suddenly cut short to reveal that the head inside the house belonged to host, Chelsea Handler, and not Lady Gaga. This was more of a disappointment than an amusing moment to the Lady Gaga fans at the party.
Best Female Video
Before the 2010 VMA show even started, Lady Gaga already had two awards to her credit:
Best Dance Video - "Bad Romance," and
Best Collaboration - "Telephone" featuring Beyonce).
Those awards were announced in the White Carpet pre-show. The first award Lady Gaga personally picked up (in her turkey dress) was for Best Female Video for, of course, "Bad Romance." Comedian, Ellen DeGeneres was on hand to present it. Gaga thanked her military escort, the late Alexander McQueen for "all the beautiful clothes in her video" and said the "little monsters are the cool kids in the party" tonight. She thanked everyone involved in making "Bad Romance" and "all the gays for remaking this video over and over again."
Best Pop Video
By the time the Best Pop Video award was announced, Lady Gaga had changed to Lady Liberty style headgear to go with a shiny black dress that was quite bulky, but had nothing on the humongous shoes she had on. Between the cumbersome dress and the enormous platform shoes, Gaga could barely walk so it was a slow and belabored trip to the stage when "Bad Romance" was announced the Best Pop Video winner (but at least she knew the way).
Lady Gaga apologized for her navigation difficulties, The award was presented by the cast of "Glee." Lady Gaga thanked her fans again and MTV "even though they asked me to cut so much out. And I refused," she declared, "because we were born this way, baby!"
In between this and the final "Bad Romance" triumph, announcements were made that Gaga's video won Best Choreography, Best Direction and Best Editing awards.
Helpful Gaga Moment
When Justin Bieber won "Best New Artist," he appeared to be confused as to which way he should walk up to the stage and Lady Gaga was trying to point him in the right direction from her seat. He finally got his bearings and his pants didn't fall on the ground either, even though he was wearing them in the current hip hop style. They were fastened with a belt in the back just below his butt.
Video of the Year
Our party consisted of mostly believers that "Bad Romance" deserved all the awards it was getting. A remark just before the announcement of Video of the Year Award that Eminem should win "out of respect" did spark a bit of controversy. Not from me -- I don't think Eminem or Bieber really deserved to win in their categories. "I'm Not Afraid" and "Baby" just ain't all that but the younger set informed me that the VMAs are not about who deserves what. It's a popularity contest. "That's cool," says I, but I still think things should be popular for a valid reason. Who can deny that, besides being a very catchy song, the video for "Bad Romance" is highly creative?
Lady Gaga actually shed tears during her acceptance of the Video of the Year award for "Bad Romance." You could see the tears streak down her face as she got all emotional, but at least she had changed to a less bulky outfit of bacon strips, with matching purse and headpiece. Looking like a little hors d'oeuvre, Gaga collected the most coveted moonman of all, while she remarked on the oddity of asking Cher to hold her meat purse.
Tears notwithstanding, Lady Gaga treated everyone to a live preview of her next record: "I was so nervous for tonight that I would let my fans down," she said. "I promised that if I won tonight, I'd announce the name of my new record," and she belted out a few bars of "Born This Way," the title track to her third studio album which is expected to be released in early 2011.
Later, at the post-VMA interview, Ellen DeGeneres asked Lady Gaga what the purpose of her meat dress is, and Gaga said it is open to interpretation. Gaga interprets it as a statement that she is not a piece of meat, and to fight for what you believe in. Today on the season premiere of her talk show, Ellen gave the multi-award winning singer a kale bikini. What statement does that make -- "I am not a cabbage?"

Post a CommentI was on the road and missed the show this year. Thanks for the recap!
Maybe that meat dress will start a fashion trend. Singles hitting the club scene could wear one to signal if they were open to meeting someone. On second thought, maybe not.
Good article and review!

I find Gaga tedious, but she's an attention getter for sure.
