Each year employees at the FSO choose a nonprofit organization as the beneficiary of their fund raising efforts. This year, at the suggestion of Hollie Apodaca, who has worked with the Humane Society for 10 years to foster dogs until a permanent home could be found for them, they chose the Humane Society because, due to the recession, it seems that more animals are being abandoned.
The sales, which take place on the fourth floor of the University's Services Building, are held every University payday and are open to anyone who is on the University of Arizona campus that would like to take a morning break with a $2 bagel and 75 cents for orange juice. Many University employees make this a breakfast stop when the bagels are available.
This year there is also a decorated Christmas tree with pictures and stories about 13 cats and dogs that the fundraising is helping to feed. They are all ready for adoption. The tree will be on display during the last two sales of the year. There will also be a raffle for a variety of prizes to further raise money for the Humane Society.
Contrary to popular belief, Tucson's Humane Society does not receive funding from the Humane Society of the United States. It is run strictly through donations and services it offers to the community. This year it is not only in need of cash donations but also towels, blankets, toilet seat covers for animal bedding, Kong-brand dog toys and canned dog and puppy food.
There will be two more bagel sales this year, the final one to be held on Dec. 18, 2009. Those wishing to participate but unable to attend the sale but who would like to participate in the fundraising for the Humane Society can contact Hollie Apodaca at 520-621 or apodacha@arizona.edu to make a donation.
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona can be reached at 520-321-3974, ext. 174.
