1. Baja Malibu
Baja Malibu is just 15 miles south of the border at San Diego, and is an excellent starting point for your surfing spring break. It is very easy to find; all you have to do is take the Baja Malibu exit from the toll road. You can park on the dea end street, though you may have to pay to park. The usual cost for parking in Baja is $2.00.
Skill level - though the surfing here is great, and you will usually see plenty of surfers out, there are powerful beach breaks and rip currents. It is not recommended for beginning or novice surfers.
Surf gear - I am not aware of a local surf shop in which to rent gear. If you are in need of renting gear, it might be a good idea to rent it in San Diego before crossing the border, or drive further south to Rosarito, then drive back up. It is only a few miles.
Where to Stay - Because Baja Malibu is so close to the border, it is usually a Day trip, but there is a KOA Campground at the San Antonio exit just north of Baja Malibu, and there are several RV parks and camp grounds between Tijuana and Rosarito.
2. Rosarito Beach
Rosarito, along with most of Mexico has almost perfect weather for surfing a good part of the year. It is also a favorite party area for college students during spring break. This is where the beach seems to stretch out for miles.
Skill level - there are waves to suit every skill level from beginner to pro.
Surf gear - Surfing gear can be rented at Inner Reef Surf Shop. Available gear are surf and boogie boards, wetsuits. Located on the free road KM 34.5 south of Rosarito; phone number if questions (661) 615-0841.
3. K - 38
This is probably one of the most popular surf spots in all of Baja. Because the beach is quite rocky, it would be a good idea for surfers to wear booties.
Skill level - there are areas around K - 38 for all skill levels, from beginner to pro.
Surf gear - if gear is needed, most surfers go up to the surf shop in Rosarito.
Where to stay - Especially during spring break, lodging could be quite scarce. Vacation rentals are available right on the beach, or you could camp right above the beach for $10. If you are looking for budget lodging you might try Los Pelicanos, at Calle Ebano #113. It is a beach front hotel and rooms rent for $35 - $65 a night.
The important thing to remember during your surfing spring break in Baja, Mexico is to have a good time, and stay safe. And, if you are driving, don't forget to bring your passport or passcard. You might not have to show it to get into Mexico, but I can guarantee that you will need it to get back into to States. Have fun!
