Baking Delicious Goodies and Trying New Recipes: My Favorite Winter Hobby

Ruth Carter

As the temperatures drop and the chilly weather sets in, many people contemplate different ways to spend their recreation time during the winter season. Some individuals enjoy athletic endeavors, such as snowboarding, skiing, ice skating, and hockey. Others spend time indoors taking part in such activities as reading, writing, creating artistic masterpieces, and the like. My personal favorite winter hobby is baking delicious goodies and trying new recipes.

To prepare for this winter hobby of cooking adventures, my family and I line up a whole host of scrumptious recipes for tasty temptations and delightful dishes that we either love to make or wish to give a try. We choose a couple of recipes to concoct each week, make the list of the ingredients that we will need, and then, either my husband or I head to the grocery store to collect the necessary components. If a particular recipe calls for ingredients that are somewhat costly (for our budget, that amount would be over $10), we select that recipe as the only new cooking experiment for the week.

Once we return from the grocery store and have the essential elements for the desired recipes in hand, my three children and I begin our cooking experience by preheating the oven, measuring and combining the ingredients, and preparing the necessary baking pans, pots, and other cooking vessels. Once the combining of the recipe components is complete, we place the mixtures into the appropriate baking or cooking containers, put them into the oven, set our timer for the designated time that our culinary endeavors will be done, and retreat to the adjoining living room to wait.

Most of the recipes that we choose to make have less than 15 ingredients, do not require more than 45 minutes of cooking time, and are easy to carry out in the comfort of our own kitchen. Once the timer goes off, we all rush into the kitchen to turn off the heat and sample the fruits of our labor.

This particular winter hobby of baking goodies and trying new recipes has several benefits. We as a family are able to enjoy a variety of delectable dishes without spending the amount of money that would be necessary if we ate out at a restaurant. We are able to test certain recipes before we share them with our friends; if the recipes that we attempt are successes, we are able to provide our extended family and friends with an edible gift or marvelous meal for them to enjoy. Because of their involvement in my culinary endeavors, my children are able to learn how to make certain foods, so when they are living independently, they will know how to prepare some meals. Lastly, variety is the spice of life, so we as a family are able to broaden our palettes and learn to appreciate all different types of cooking creations.
