Balance Holiday Sweets with These Fruit Salad Recipes

Paula Myers
The Christmas holiday season is a good excuse to eat a lot of cookies, candy, cakes and other sweets. Eating sweets is a tradition during Christmas. Everyone packs on a few extra pounds during the holidays, too. Don't feel guilty; it doesn't hurt to eat some sweets. But be sure to eat something healthy during the holidays, too. Eating fruit salads is a way to do that. Fruit salads are really easy to make and they supply vitamin C and other nutrients that your body needs. Most of the fruit salads are also low in fat. Most kids like to eat fruit salad, too. There are several different varieties that you can make.

Here are two of my favorite fruit salad recipes that I have used during the holiday season.
Glazed Fruit Salad
1 quart of fresh strawberries
1 20 ounce can of pineapple chunks
4 firm bananas
1 16 ounce pouch of strawberry glaze

Find large bowl. Clean strawberries and cut in half. Put in bowl. Drain your pineapple and add in. Slice bananas and add to mixture. Gently stir fruit together. Fold in the strawberry glaze. Put in refrigerator to chill. Enjoy eating. This is a delicious Fruit Salad and it is so easy to make.

Fruit Salad
Make your fruit salad dressing first. Beat 1 egg. Add 1/3 cups of sugar, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 cup of marshmallows, and 1 cup of evaporated milk to bowl. Pour in sauce pan. Heat on low until marshmallows are melted. Mixture needs to be thick but not too thick. Let fruit salad dressing cool off some and then put in refrigerator to chill.

Cut up apples and bananas and put in a large bowl. Sprinkle some fresh fruit on top of fruit so the color won't change. Cut up oranges and add a can of drained pineapple chunks to the fruit salad. Take cooled fruit salad dressing out of the refrigerator and pour over the fruit. Mix together well, cover, and put back in the refrigerator to chill.

This fruit salad recipe is one that my mom always fixed during Christmastime. It sounds strange with the vinegar in the dressing, but it is a good fruit salad.

Don't forget about your health during the Christmas season. Don't fill up on cookies, candy, cake, and other sweets all the time. Choose a healthy option like Fruit Salad instead of the usual Christmas sweets. And you can get your daily requirement of vitamin C, too.
