Balancing Your Life Between Work and Home

Balancing your life between work and home is not an easy nut to crack. However, there are various techniques one can use to achieve a balanced life. The various factors that come into play are, spouse, children, friends and the type of work you do.

Getting organized both at work and at home is the first step. You have to set priorities, work smarter not harder. I personally, had to do this at my job recently. I found that I was creating a lot of unnecessary work and travel for myself by making calls from a cold calling list in a linear fashion, simply because that's the way it was sent to me. When it came time to do my visits, I was traveling all over the place and wasting a lot of valuable time and gas. Once I realized my mistake, I began calling potential clients who were grouped in a tighter geographical area; this made visiting them a lot more easy and practical. Sound simple huh? But we practice this sort of behavior all the time.

Have a catch-all box or boxes. A catch-all box is simply a box to put everything in from the top of your desk, to be sorted out later. Keeping your desk clear of clutter is a way to create an environment you will be happy to work in. Do this at work and at home.

Having a scheduled family meeting once a week has helped my marriage tremendously. Spiritual reading, report card review, home improvement ideas and a shopping list should be on the top of the agenda at a family meeting. While spending this quality/focused time with your family, give them your full, undivided attention. Remember, by doing this, you are creating relationships with your spouse and children that are not incidental but rather instrumental to your growth and happiness.

You can create harmony in your life through a delicate dance of work, family and friends. It's important to keep things in perspective. Knowing the difference between friends and associates helps me keep things in perspective. That way I don't waste time trying to organize things around people who fall into the associate category.

Remember, balancing your life between work and home is not an easy nut to crack, but it can be cracked!
