Ballad of the Ice Clan; Part 1

Susan Elliott
Karn looked upon Elenora
stroking her raven hair so fine.
His face a completed portrait
of love and truth sublime.

Past summers were spent together
exploring during youth,
and now the married couple
longed for lasting truce.

Unfortunate were the lovers
because, wars must still be fought.
And, while Karn and Eoghan hunted
misfortune fell their lot.

Deep seated in the darkness
an evil presence lurked
waiting till the midnight hour
to shatter the Elioghts' hearth.

In morn light the forest sparkled
like dew in the frozen snow
and shielded Karn's blue eyes
from the carnage down below.

Smokey burning timber
caught by the arctic wind
brought the smell of blood shed
up the trail to him.

He pressed Albin harder
driving him hard across the snow
and lighted off his back
exploring his empty home.

The lively village settled
like an empty ghostly shell,
a tortured non-existence
like a demon torn from Hell.

Across the blackened fields
he saw, smoke billowed out of flame
So, Karn in haste fled t'wards it
pulling hard on Albin's reins.

He found his dear Elenora
barely holding to shattered life
despite her damaged body
carved by Magnus' knife.

He whispered how he loved her
burying his face against her side
and brushed her raven hair
away from unseeing eyes.

The village ransacked and ruined
the Elioght clan were all but dead.
Fergus, wielder of the flame,
longed to rest his battered head.

Karn, left his dead Elenora
and crawled to the mage's side
touching his sacred face
and examining his missing eyes.

Blue flame arched up from him
and rested firmly in Karn's hand
the flame passing onto him
as Fergus' spirit left the land.

Karn left the scene in anger
riding toward Eoghan's home,
a quite mountain cottage
hewn from rock and stone.

The only two remaining
sons of the Elioght clan
rode hard to fight the Maxwells
to rid them from the land.

*And here, dear reader is where the ballad stops and the epic begins. This poem is written about the novel I am working on. It seems I can think clearer in meter.
