"Balls of Fury" Gets Two Coffees and Half a Can of Red Bull

A Movie Worth the Watch

J P Whickson
Finally after viewing two movies that qualified for naptime we managed to get to the completion of the trio. We were a little nervous when putting the DVD in, for fear it too would be another clunker. Thank God, we had nothing to worry about.

"Balls of Fury" is about becoming the best that you can be. It creates a tongue in cheek setting in the wild world of underground table tennis. The hero is an impossible screw up that is played Dan Fogler. Mike kept remarking how he reminded him of a Jack Black character and he was right. While the acting was okay, I couldn't get away from that remark and kept comparing him all the way through the film.

The highlight of the film was definitely Christopher Walken. I remember watching this somewhat strange looking man in horror movies. Little did I realize until reviewing his history of films and television appearances what a great comedic actor he was. This movie enhances that belief. He plays the flamingly gay arch enemy ping-pong fanatic to the hilt. We laughed at so many of the parts that it is hard to isolate even one of them. Definitely a five star, three Red Bull performance.

The FBI agent played by George Lopez is another memorable performance. Lopez's easy-going delivery of one-liners was timed perfectly. His capabilities as an actor have never been questioned by me since I am a George Lopez convert since I found the "George Lopez" program in reruns. It is hard to get good comedy at two in the morning.

He plays the underrated FBI agent that is using Randy Datona (Dan Fogler) as his last ditch effort to catch the dreaded Feng (Christopher Walken). In order to train Randy to his potential he uses the services of James Hong as Master Wong, a blind table tennis master and his niece, Maggie Wong played by Maggie Q.

I found the movie a delight. It was a little silly at times, but all-the-better. The setting was hilarious and jokes were one after another. If you are in a horrible mood this will lighten your spirits. It is definitely not a snooze but a couple cups of coffee and half a Red Bull. It will wake you up and make your day a little better. This was worth the price of the video. It isn't the top rating of two coffees and two Red Bulls, but it is up there in the world of entertainment.

Rating system:

Two Snoozer- demand your money back

A Snooze and A Doze - rent it cheap, if at all

A Snooze - Slightly below average, only for a really boring weekend.

A light Doze -Average

A Cup of Coffee - Slightly above average.

Two Coffees -Entertaining

Two Coffees and A Red Bull- Worth seeing

Two Coffees and Two Red Bulls - The Hall of Fame. Pay to see it at a theatre.

So glad you mentioned Christopher Walken. I'd listen to him read the phone book...wait, didn't Kevin Spacey do an imitation of him doing that? In any case, love your rating system and this review!
