Baltimore Orioles Postseason History

Since arriving from St Louis to start the 1954 season the Baltimore Orioles have appeared in the postseason 10 times. Here is a look at the Baltimore Orioles postseason history.

1966. The Baltimore Orioles win their first American League Pennant and advance to their first World Series. They face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. The Orioles sweep the series in four games. They shut out the Dodgers in the final three games and allow only two runs in the series. The Orioles win their first World Series in franchise history. Frank Robinson is named the MVP of the series with two home runs and three RBI's.

1969. In the first year of divisional play the Baltimore Orioles win the American League Eastern Division title. They face the Minnesota Twins, winners of the Western Division, in the American League Championship Series. The Orioles sweep the series in three games to advance to the World Series. In the World Series the Orioles face the New York Mets. The Orioles win game one, but the Mets win the next four games to take the series in five games.

1970. The Baltimore Orioles win their second consecutive division title and once again face the Minnesota Twins in the League Championship Series. They once again sweep the series in three games to advance to their second consecutive World Series.

The Orioles face the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. The Orioles win the first three games of the series before Cincinnati wins game four. The Orioles win game five by a score of 9 to 3 to win the series and their second World Championship in team history. Brooks Robinson who hit .429 with two home runs and six RBI's is named the MVP of the series.

1971. The Baltimore Orioles win their third consecutive division title. They face the Oakland A's in the League Championship Series. The Orioles once again sweep the series in three games to win their third straight American League Pennant. The Orioles face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The Pirates take a three games to two series lead. The Orioles win game six in extra innings to force a game seven. But the Pirates would prevail in game seven by a score of 2 to 1 to win the World Series.

1973. The Orioles win their fourth division title in five years and advance to the League Championship Series against the Oakland A's. The series is extended to a fifth and deciding game but the A's prevail by a score of 3 -0 to win the series and the pennant.

1974. The Orioles once again win the American League Eastern Division and once again face the Oakland A's in the playoffs. The Orioles win game one but the A's win the next three games to take the series in four games.

1979. The Orioles return to the postseason for the first time since 1974 when they win their division. The Orioles face the California Angels in the American League Championship Series. The Orioles win the series in four games to capture the American League Pennant. The Orioles face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The Orioles take a three games to one series lead and are on the verge of winning their third World Series title. But the Pirates battle back to win the final three games of the series to win the World Series in 7 games.

1983. The Orioles win their 7th division title in franchise history to advance to the postseason. They face the Chicago White Sox in the League Championship Series. The White Sox win the first game but the Orioles win the next three to capture the series and the American League Pennant. It is Baltimore's 6th American League Pennant. The Orioles face the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. Once again they drop the first game of the series but than win the next four to win the World Series in five games. It is Baltimore's third World Championship. Rick Dempsey is named series MVP with a .385 average one home run and two RBI's.

1996. The Orioles return to the postseason after a twelve season hiatus when they win the American League Wild Card. They face the Cleveland Indians in the Divisional Round of the playoffs and win the series in four games to advance to the American League Championship Series. The Orioles face the New York Yankees in the ALCS. The two teams split the first two games in New York, but the Yankees win the next three in Baltimore to capture the series and the American League Pennant in five games.

1997. The Orioles make the postseason for the second consecutive season when they win the American League Eastern Division. They face the Seattle Mariners in the first round and win the series in four games. The Orioles once again move on to the League Championship Series. This time they face the Cleveland Indians. The Indians would win the series in six games, winning the final game 1 -0 in extra innings.
