Baltimore's Best Irish Pubs

Julie Heath
Baltimore is home to a plethora of fabulous Irish Pubs, many are authentic in food, beverage, vibe and atmosphere-so which one do you choose? That decision mostly depends on location. How far do you want to go for authenticity, what about the parking situation, what else is in the neighborhood, and, the big question, how far do you want to drive home after the celebrations? Here are several wonderful establishments listed by their proximity to neighborhoods. Nearly all of these pubs open at 11am and close around 2am:

Tir Na Nog:

Inner Harbor Area

201 East Pratt, Baltimore MD 21202

Tir Na Nog is a gorgeous two story Irish Pub and restaurant. Sophisticated, yet casual dining is upstairs area decorated in rich, glistening woods and subtle green painted walls. The bar area is classy, but also has that upscale Irish Pub look with ornate wood paneling and high ceilings that open toward skylights. There is also outside dining in the summer on the patio, with views of the hustle and bustle of the inner harbor. More than 20 beers are on draught. Parking is validated here, so bring your ticket.

Patrick's of Pratt Street

Downtown, Inner Harbor Area-near Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum

934 W. Pratt, Baltimore MD 21223

Patrick's of Pratt Street was voted Baltimore's Best Irish Pub in 2007. It has been in the same location since 1863 and under the same family ownership since 1847. It boasts of being America's Oldest Irish Pub. If you want to enjoy a real piece of history, head to Patrick's. A renovation in 1999 uncovered original tin ceilings and brought to life the oak stand up bar.

Claddah Pub

Canton's O'Donnell Square Area

2918 O'Donnell Street, Baltimore MD

This is place is truly hopping in March with their annual "Meet in the Street" festival outside the pub. This typically takes place on a weekend of or prior to St. Patrick's Day. Festivities begin on Friday March 12th in 2010. Located in two side by side historic row houses, you might have to push your way inside because the front bar is often packed. Dining fare includes the typical Irish bangers, corned beef, and pies, but is also complimented with a Chesapeake flair with seafood offerings. Try the Sample Bakers Dozen (Oysters, Wings, Shrimp) along with one of the dozen or so beers on tap.

Ryan's Daughter Irish Pub

North of Baltimore, Edge of City Limits

600 E. Belvedere Ave, Baltimore MD

If you want to stay more suburban but still want that downtown pub feel, Ryan's Daughter is a good bet. The décor is classic Irish pub with the addition of the fireplace that makes it cozy on cold winter nights. The Artisan Cheese appetizer plate is a good choice if you're just stopping by for appetizers and a beer. You'll get different cheeses, chutney, pears, apples, mustard and crackers.

James Joyce

President Street Area, Near Harbor

616 S. President Street, Baltimore MD 21202

This beautiful pub was manufactured in Ireland and shipped to the states in 2002 where it was fitted on site. There's validated parking if you bring the ticket with you. Live music is played almost nightly, with a long line-up on St. Patrick's Day. Draught beer includes all the Irish favorites including Guinness, Harp, and James Joyce. Of course, all the traditional Irish foods are offered such as light, not greasy Fish and Chips, Shepard's Pie and Corned Beef and Cabbage.

Mick O'Sheas

North Charles Street, Downtown

328 North Charles Street, Baltimore MD 21201

The décor is classic Irish pub with brick walls and wood paneling, high ceilings and a long bar. There are pool tables for your entertainment. Their food is somewhat eclectic with Shepard's Pie offered along with burritos and burgers. The Welsh Crab Dip is spectacular. Another good appetizer choice is the Ploughman's Platter with banger sausage, cheese, apples and grapes.

Slainte Irish Pub

Fells Point

1702 Thames Street, Baltimore MD 21231

Slainte's opens at 7am for their hearty Irish breakfast. For special events, the party will spill into the streets at Slainte's. Once again, the interior features rich wood tones, brick walls, wood ceilings, and a long, narrow bar. There are plenty of high top tables for seating. Their Oyster Po'Boy is my favorite, but I'd also recommend their Corned Beef Sandwich. Daily specials are featured including a homemade pot pie, which is scrumptious.
