Ban on Rap: Should Rap Be Banned?

Concerned Citizen
The United States Government is only allowed to restrict freedom of speech if it presents an immediate harm to society. So why isn't there a ban on rap music? That is what I am going to address in this paper.

First of all, rap music is not even real music. I used to be in a Christian band and am a music major, so I know what music is. It is very possible to record an entire rap song without even knowing how to play a musical instrument, and without even knowing how to sing. Rap is simply a conglomerate of words, usually offensive words, spoken very fast and backed up by a simulated band. I say simulated because generally these artists (or non-artists as is usually the case) generally use drum machines and other simulators. Now that we have sufficiently covered the fact that rap is not actually music and therefore not art, let's get on to the substance of the argument.

Rap is incredibly offensive. There are very few rap songs that do not, in some form or another, mention sex, doing drugs, or even murder. The language is incredibly horrible, as a rap song (if censored) is nothing more than a long beep. Women are mentioned in a very derogatory fashion. Examples include calling them hoes and other terms that cannot be used in this paper. These writers make them out to be nothing more than objects of pleasure. This is a horrible thing and should not be allowed to continue.

Rap is not only offensive, it is destructive. This is where the music industry has people fooled. They say that they are "just lyrics" or "just a good beat." What people don't realize is that rap promotes things. It promotes things such as gangs. It promotes things such as gang violence. Some lyrics talk about killing for the sake of gang protection, gang reputation, or just killing to kill. They promote things like gang initiations. These initiations have included some terrible things. Some of the worst include things like carjacking or killing innocent teenage girls and raping them. They also promote sex with prostitutes or other such "loose" women. They promote theft of cars or homes. I, for one, do not like the fact that people who listen to rap are being encouraged to get into a gang and kill people for the fun of it. I don't like the fact that rap encourages people to steal my things for fun. I do not understand why a ban on rap music has not been implemented. How can the promotion of these things not prove a compelling societal interest?

As decent human beings, we have to realize that rap is dangerous, offensive, destructive filth and we must not put up with it. Society as a whole would be a better thing without it, and it would absolutely cut down on violence, rape, and gangs. would be remiss in allowing this abomination to continue. If you really care about 's crime levels, you will do something about it. If you really care about society as a whole, offensive material, or the good of mankind, you would do something about it. Please, call the closest governmental official, such as a congressman or representative and push for a ban on this horrible filth.

There is a lot of problems with the world. A lot of it has to do with rap music. A few rappers have already died rapping for what they believe. Most of it was West side talking about the east side or East side talking about the west side. To me rap should be as dead as disco.

    would have been better feedback.

This paper is almost laughable. Scratch that, did I say 'almost'? As a 'decent human being', you need to realise that rap is in our blood. Our ancestors rapped. Maybe you should look up the definition when you've finished being narrow-minded! Many great artists, like Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys and Red Hot Chili Peppers rapped. Did their songs yell out sex, drugs, abuse, violence and misuse of alcohol? I think not! Many rappers now are actually using their talent for the good (Eminem is, believe it or not, a good example). His new topics are about recovery, and domestic violence (how it's not ok). Finally, all music can be offensive, some even more that how much you think rap is. You say that rap harms society. Think about death metal. Does that sound happy and harmless? Should that be played constantly on the radio? Obviously not.
ps. you obviously have personal issues beliefs on rap. If you had made your paper a bit more two-sided, I'm very sure that there

Rap is the kind of noise only a monkey could appreciate. Blues and jazz is music played with musical instruments.
Listen to some and learn something.

Unfortunately, many mainstream artists will not change their lyrical content because "degrading lyrics" sell. And wrong on the other point as well, many listeners DO in fact look for "hoes, drugs, violence, sex" because they want to buy into the thug image. Granted there are those of us who aren't foolish enough to become flocks of brainless sheep.

However, the problem lies in its more explicit lines, such as the first set I provided. The artist blurts the f-word incessantly and unnecessarily. There are worse lyrics later in the song, but those can be omitted. The point is, hip-hop artists need to clean up their songs. It's not necessary to degrade women and curse (two examples, taken from the two sets I provided) in music to make good music. They need to more effectively consider their audience. If the listeners like the beats, the flow of lyrics, then give them what they like; but leave out the vulgar filler. If listeners of hip-hop were asked what they liked best about hip-hop, I honestly doubt that the listeners would answer that their favorite parts of hip-hop are the parts that stereotype all women as "hoes" and curse nonstop.

Well the author is coming off as someone who just hates rap and needed to vent. If this was a paper you would get a C+, You have a weak conclusion and there is no catchy intro. If you are going to argue that rap does indeed cause people to do things there's no evidence of any research. By the way this is coming from someone who listens to rap on a daily basis.

Let's all try to piece together an argument claiming that Christmas songs oughta be banned. Cause I mean come on, I saw mommy kissing santa claus? That hella promotes promiscuity and cheating on your husband.
