Band Interview: 'Get Set Go' Catches Us Up on Their Music and Being on Grey's Anatomy, After Gaining an Audience Via MySpace

I recently got to interview one of the hottest bands, 'Get Set Go', who have gained a huge following on MySpace. I had a couple questions on their new album and how the heck they got a gig on the hottest show on television. Band member Mike TV answered all my questions.

GRAPEVINE: Is this your second or third album? (sorry I was a little confused when I was reading everything on myspace)

MIKETV: We've got two albums in stores, So You've Ruined Your Life was the first. Ordinary World was the second. The third, as yet unnamed record, is gonna be in stores in January, if we manage to find a name for the record that everyone on the planet, and their mothers, and their personal lords and saviors can agree upon. Because that's exactly how many people have to agree before our record label will allow us to name the damn record. Ha!

GRAPEVINE: You have angst filled songs like 'I hate everyone' to 'a song 'Kiss the girl' which are both catchy, what inspires most of your songs?

MIKETV: Really, truthfully, I have no idea. Each song's inspiration comes differently. Sometimes it starts with a lyrical idea. Othertimes it starts with the music and the llyrics come later. Sometimes I write the song in its entirety without picking up the guitar. Just by singing it. I really don't know. The songs just show up. I mean, I do have to work to shape them into something recognizable, but that initial inspiration happens in some arcane, mercurial, unrecognizable way every time. Unless it doesn't. How's that for a non-answer?

GRAPEVINE: Did the dynamics of your group change with memebers came and left? Was it hard to adjust to the change of working with new people?

MIKETV: Yeah, it's always tough to lose and gain members. There's something beautiful, something intangible about having a line-up that really gels. But we've had to suffer the slings and arrows of rotating membership until this past year. I think we've got a line-up that's gonna stick around. At least for the foreseeable future. It all really depends on the interest of the world at large. If they keep asking for us, then we'll keep playing. I mean, I'm gonna keep doing this til I die. But my bandmates need to eat.

GRAPEVINE: How did you guys land the gig (is that the proper music term? :) on Greys Anatomy?

MIKETV: Well, my roommate's significant ex-girlfriend is Susan Veil, who works at Grey's Anatomy. She turned Shonda Rhimes and Alex Patsavas onto the band, and they had proper amount of cynicism, bouyant senses of humor, and intelligence to get the band. Also, they've got excellent taste in clothes, I love their hair, and they smell great!

GRAPEVINE: Are you guys fans of the show?

MIKETV: Yeah, I watch the show. I'm hoping that Meredith and McDreamy end up together. Of course, that'd be the end of the show. So I'm hoping ten seasons from now, they actually make it work.

GRAPEVINE: Most of your shows are played at all ages venues, do you do that on purpose?

MIKETV: Yeah. We figure that if we're taking the trouble to drive all the way to Boston or Miami or Denver that we might as well allow all of our friends and fans to come out. Young people really are the heart and soul of music. They fall in love with music. In that true, passionate, fiery sense of love. And they define themselves by the music that they listen to. It's part of their identities. I don't see very many 25 year-olds doing that. And certainly not 30-year olds. So, since we care passionately about our music and the music of our friend's bands, and the bands that we love, we figure we might as well hang out with folk that feel the same.

GRAPEVINE: What can fans expect at a show? Do you guys interact with the audience, sign autographs?

MIKETV: Well, that's changing. And as we grow it's gonna get better. Right now we're still relegated 50% of the time, to play those crappy cattle-call shows, where it's one band on, and then one band off, with no time for band/audience interaction. But we're working on that. Because our favorite shows are the ones where we get to hang out with friends and fans before the show, and then during the show, we allow for song requests, and we banter, and engage the audience, and then afterwards, we hang out, sign autographs, and if people are willing and if we've got the time, we'll all go get food together.

GRAPEVINE: Finally...I had to ask, are any of you guys single?

MIKETV: Well, actually, at the time of this interview, only one of us is single. Believe it or not. Six months ago, it was a different story. Six months from today, it might be again. But right now, most of us are involved. Sorry ladies. Or in Jim's case, sorry guys. Oh yeah, and Eric too. Well, and Colin swings both ways. And we're not sure what Dave's into. Although we do hear strange bleeting coming out of the van sometimes when he's watching the gear.
