"Banned Sprite Commercial" a Gimmick, Never Aired

Carol Bengle Gilbert
Huffington Post as well as a slew of blogs jumped on the story yesterday that Germany allegedly banned a Sprite commercial featuring oral sex, even as YouTube pulled the video of the commercial featured with the story due to copyright/trademark issues.

New York Press tells the banned Sprite commercial story differently and cites the actor who starred in the allegedly banned Sprite commercial as its source. John Jones IV told the New York Press that the offending advertisement is a spec commercial, not a commercial for actual airing on television. Jones made the spec Sprite commercial in New York The Sprite commercial featuring oral sex was never banned, indeed it was not even aired, in Germany. Nor was the not-banned Sprite spec commercial aired elsewhere.

The not-banned Sprite commercial that never aired in Germany was produced by Greencard Studios of Brooklyn.

Not-Banned Sprite Commercial Not First to Showcase Oral Sex

The buzz about a Sprite commercial being banned for featuring oral sex- interracial oral sex between Jones who is black and a white woman- drew serious attention online as if it were novel. But the not-banned Sprite spec commercial is not close to being the first advertising to broach the subject of oral sex on television or in print media.

Unlike the spec Sprite commercial which was never aired or banned, this commercial from Korea did air according to Spike.

And this Burger King ad campaign using a photo suggestive of oral sex with the words "it'll blow your mind away" was unleashed in Singapore recently.

Ads Featuring Sexual Trios Preceded Not-Banned Sprite Commercial

And of course there have been a spate of ads recently that were criticized for displaying threesomes in a sexual context including the infamous Calvin Klein ad characterized as soft porn by offended New Yorkers.

Not-Banned Sprite Commercial Follows Ad Featuring Implied Solo Sex

WE International in Sweden even went so far as to advertise girls' underwear with an image of a girl with her hands inside her panties.

From the Sprite commercial that was never banned to all the other sexually explicit advertising making its way onto the airwaves and billboards that deserves to be banned sex in advertising is becoming not merely ubiquitous but increasingly explicit.

I've noticed that commercials are continually pushing the limits of good taste. Nothing surprises me these days. But this medicine blog surprises me much!

At least the limits haven't been pushed this far for real, yet.

Hello. Adam Brown here from The Coca-Cola Company.

I just wanted to reiterate what many of you have commented here that that this video was NOT produced by or for The Coca-Cola Company or any of its brands. We are appalled by the content of this fake ad. The use of our Sprite brand in this video is completely unauthorized.

If anyone had bothered to check the ADVERTISING BLOGS yesterday such as adland.tv (which still has the ad) or adfreak.com you would have know, early Monday that this ad was fake from the get-go.

We are such a bizarre society. Assumptions, innuendo, supposition, gossip - all much more important and interesting than facts.

Try this site, it worked for me:
    http://televission.blogspot.com/
It asks you to do a little survey but then it takes you right to the commercial! Enjoy :)

What I love is how everyone jumped on the bandwagon with this one, without doing a lick of research first.
