Barack Obama Delivers Philadelphia Speech on Race, Pastor Jeremiah Wright

Speech Covered Race, Reverend Jeremiah Wright

Manny Calavera
In a 40-minute speech in Philadelphia today, Senator Barack Obama addressed many of the inflammatory issues surrounding his Presidential campaign in recent weeks, from his former Pastor Jeremiah Wright's incendiary statements to issues of race in America as a whole.

Leading his speech with the Preamble to the United States Constitution, Obama began quickly, addressing a long history of slavery and civil rights in the country, before moving on to current race relations and the state of his Presidential campaign. The speech, given against the advice of his campaign advisers, sought to put both the media coverage and Reverend Jeremiah Wright's statements into context.

In one particular effective statement, Senator Obama compared his affinity with Wright to the love he feels for his white grandmother, whom he says has a history of racial slurs and ethnic stereotypes and once admitted to being nervous about passing "black men" on the streets.

While media coverage of the speech will likely focus on his statements regarding Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Senator Barack Obama nonetheless attempted to tackle a very divisive and very touchy subject in America head-on. Initial reaction to the speech has been overwhelmingly favorable, and regardless of the political outcome, one has to imagine that Senator Obama achieved the goals he set when he decided to make this speech today.

I am voting for a president, not a preacher. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/751053/pastor_of_hillary_clintons_former_church.html

Barack Obama's recent March 18 speech on race relations in America was one of the boldest and most relevant things to come from an American politician in years. Take a listen to my satire, in which I condensed a 40 minute speech down to 2. Mr. Obama urges a revolution on Washington and says the current administration should be taken to prison. Check it out

(CONTINUED) Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up," Ferraro said. "Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

As excited as I was to learn more about Obama, I now know that I will only learn what little someone has the guts to dig up. THE KNOWN BELIEFS, VALUES, POLICIES, AND CAPABILITIES OF McCAIN ARE SCARY. HILLARY NOT NEARLY SO, But NOTHING IS SCARIER THAN ENDING UP WITH A PRESIDENT WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!!

How this speech was received as taking the subject head-on floors me. He attempted to justify the comments made. He argued that 'others' do this all the time. That blaming every problem blacks have on whites is due to everything whites have done to blacks.

But when he blamed the media, that has carried him in a protective bubble til now, for playing the clips over and over for dividing our country THAT WAS TOO MUCH!

What he did cements the knowledge that every single thing that seems in any way negative towards him is racist, including these clips being 'dug up'. Since when does mentioning drug abuse make it ok and no longer fair game? Since when does stating you don't agree with all of someone's view equal any more questions will ONLY BE ASKED BY RACIST? Why is it ok that his preacher is a racist and a hater, a muslim supporter and visitor to Libia AND his SPIRITUAL advisor? When Geraldine Ferraro expressed HER beliefs of Any time anybody does anything that in any way pull
