Barack Obama: Facts and Fairytales

Is Barack Obama a Muslim? Is Barack Obama Loyal to the United States?

Mila
On Jan. 3, 2008 amid a crowded reception hall in a small church in Iowa, I was a precinct captain for Barack Obama. As a caucus leader for Barack Obama supporters, I was approached with interesting questions from curious undecided voters on caucus night, including, "Isn't he a Muslim? I got an email that said he was, and it said that it was true!" "Didn't he refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance? I don't trust him." It seems these days it just takes some words printed on a screen forwarded by an unsuspecting "friend" to ruin a man's reputation. In an effort to debunk some of these myths, I went on a fact-finding mission of my own.

According to Snopes.com, a widely respected myth-busting site, the claim that Barack Obama is a radical Muslim with loyalties to Muslim interests is false. The truth is, Barack Obama lived outside of the country in India with his mother and step-father for a few years as is clearly stated on his website. In fact, this myth was so widely believed to be true, that CNN produced an in-depth report refuting the claim.

The second popular email myth floating around about Barack Obama did not place his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance at an event attended by all candidates in Iowa at Tom Harkin's Steak Fry. Again, the email asserts itself to be true, but a quick look at this video from ABC news shows Barack Obama standing with arms down intently listening to a woman singing the "Star Spangled Banner" while all other political figures on stage were standing with hands on hearts during the anthem, not necessarily attentively. At a town hall meeting in Iowa, I saw Barack Obama personally respond to this question posed by an audience member who said her son was disappointed when he heard that he did not put his hand over his heart. Barack Obama shook his head and wondered aloud how that story got started, clarifying that he always places his hand over his heart during the pledge.

So who is Barack Obama? Throughout my research it became clear I had made the right choice on caucus night. Barack Obama has made it clear that he is a Christian, family man. He sounds too good to be true and praying on cynicism is the competition's fairytale strategy for winning against him. The unabashed truth about Barack Obama is easily found all over the internet if sought objectively.

Research, fact-find for yourself. My conclusions? Barack Obama is a candidate with the judgment and courage to lead a country. He is a man who has led a life of improbable journeys to make remarkable progress working for the lives of others. He is a living legend, a historical hero unfolding before our eyes, a visionary, and the best candidate to lead our country forward with integrity to resolve the urgent issues facing our country today.

Here is the problem. This article is intentional disinformation at worst, emotional conclusions without fact checking, at the best. Let's examine some facts.

    1) Barak Hussein Obama is a Muslim according to Sharia (Islamic law.) His father was a Muslim.

1a) He had to be a practicing Muslim in order to go to public Indonesian ( I know nothing of his time in India as indicated in the article) school since you have to be an Indonesian citizen to be a student (to be a citizen you have to be a Muslim).
    2) Obama who claims he is a Christian (for U.S. support) is true if, nominally, in that the radical religious hate-spreading institution does have the word 'church' in its title but the 'Reverand'-his admitted mentor and friend of over 20 years preaches radicalism, hate for the U.S., racial hate for non-blacks esp. 'whites' and Jews and often has radical, hate-preaching Muslims including Louis Farrakhan as guest speakers/preachers at the chicago 'church

I think Obama is doing a great job for the American people. It isn't easy being president of the USA, let's be honest. Let's support him.

Yes, but just as there is a such thing as "too good to be true," there is also a thing as "too bad to be true." Like Newton's third law of motion, every action has an opposite and equal reaction. In the current political climate, this is known as the GOP.

The Federal Flag Code, Section 6, states that "During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart."

Cool title. I see that you got a lot of people heated with this one.

Although you make a noble attempt, your "research" can hardly be qualified as such, by any standards.

You are the type of American that most of us hope will be distinguished by an Obama presidency. Either learn to read or learn to read a map. Barack spent time in INDONESIA, not INDIA as you claim. Indonesia, being a predominantly Muslim country, hence a primary reason why the Muslim myth even began.

Really? I share your viewpoint, but AC allowed this piece of ... to be published? Do your homework. Thank goodness YOU weren't the VP ticket. You're almost as bad as Palin's gaffes on the "country" of Africa.

Mila....Thank you for this great article, which helps people clear out the various smears and lies about Mr. Obama.

    To Diane (who posted 8/05)...

Barack was raised nearly exclusively by his mother and maternal grandparents (who were from Kansas, but moved to Hawaii for business when Barack was a baby). He was very close to them, but it was the memory of his mother having to argue with insurance companies while terminally ill with cancer that gave him the courage of his convictions to do the right thing in service to community and government. He spent some time with his Kenyan father when he was 10 years old, but his father died in a car accident when Barack was still very young.
