Barack Obama Makes Fun of the Special Olympics

Barack Obama

Zach Golt
Yesterday March 19, 2008 the President on the United States appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. During a light hearted conversation President Barack Obama stated that he recently bowled a 129 in the white house bowling ally.
Leno responded in a sarcastic manner "That's very good Mr. President"

to which the President Barack Obama responded while giggling
"like the Special Olympics or something".

For those who poke fun at the less fortunate is a shame, but for someone in his position to be making jokes about a program that changes lifes is just plain ignorant. Let's set the record straight the average scores for Special Olympics bowling exceeds his pitiful 129. The Special Olympics bowling average is about 158.67 so before Barak makes fun of the Special Olympics he should get his facts straight. President Obama still has yet to issue a formal apology for his outlandish comment on the Special Olympics, but his pres team has issued a statement for him stating

"The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,"

The Deputy Press Secretary Stated "He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world."

Personally I'd like to hear what Barack Obama has to say for himself.

I agree that President Obama made a mistake in the choice of words "Special Olympics" at an attempt to explain his terrible bowling score. I do not feel he had malicious intent at all. He is a human just like all of us. The problem is we (free world thinkers) attack the wrong issues. We hang on things that are not that important. for ex: Michelle Obama's arms! What the Obamas eat for dinner!I submit that everyone on this blog has thought or said something behind closed doors worse than his comment on the Leno show and thought nothing of it. He is the President of the United States and that alone makes him presidential. Class has nothing to do with it. The office of president does not make you have class and he was not elected because of it. He was elected because he has integrity, credibility and forward thinking and many more plus factors. We all can benefit from taking a class on the topics of:

I find the comment rude and as a parent of a child in the Special Olympics am quite offended. I voted and supported Obama and must say I am surprised by this comment. My daughter is one of 22,000 people in Illinois who participate in the Special Olympics they are the ones who i hope do not hear this comment. Obama is a sharp speaker and to slip up like this is very questionable of his character and his views of those who are disabled. They work very hard and have more sportsmanship than most professional athletes.

I agree, Joni, that it was a slip and nothing more. He made the kind of comment that all people have made at one time or another but don't want to admit to. Unfortunately, his comment was on television. I'm sure the far right would much rather talk about something like this than about what a mess the previous administration (and all the way back to their precious Ronald Reagan) has made of the economy.

I didn't vote for Obama and I don't like any of his views on abortions or anything like that I work with special Ed children, but I feel it was a slip it of his tongue like we all do at one time or another but his is just spread all over the world, he has a tough job and he is a man he is not perfect as some might think he is and he will make mistakes.

  • Valerie3/20/2009

Further, Obama would just rather follow a path of abortion so there would not be anyone in the special olympics - or also just abort them and use them for stem cell research - he is disgusting!

I am amazed at what people allow Obama to get away with. In the circles I am involved in any type of negative comment about a group of people you are considered a classless, uniformed bore. Obama is our president and he should not be making these kind of gaffes - but maybe he is a classless, uninformed bore! I know that he is not presidential material!

From the comment made, and the manner in which it was made has no implication that President Obama was speaking negatively toward the special Olympics.

Based on situations and circumstances in peolples lives they become so sensitive about things and misinterpret what is being said.

Step outside your emotions and look at the big picture, believe me his comment had nothing to do with you or the special Olympics.

    Lighten Up

I knew this would make waves. Come on, he's human like everyone else. I saw the entire segment and it was nothing, really, just an innocent, passing comment. He's human and this in no way indicates his ability to resolve economic problems.

To look at his record on Americans with disability is to look at calculated political maneuvers that are designed to maximize popularity by giving the image of compassion for these people. But what you call just a "slip of the tongue" is a spur of the moment comment that gives some insight into the character of the man. Someone who truly had genuine compassion for disabled people would never have said that.
