Kent State University has been involved in many news worthy items over the years. September 3rd, 2008 was no different. Barack Obama chose to come to the Kent State Tuscarawas campus. Scheduled to speak at 10am, it was chaos and mass confussion for most of the morning. The students had not been informed of Obama's visit. Nor were the Kent State students granted access to the assembly area. This area was open only to members of the press and Obama's invited guests.
Students and professors, alike, were disgruntled at having classroom access hindered by Obama's visit. One professor was heard yelling," I don't care who he is. If I can not get to my locker, he can kiss my ass!" Not everyone felt it was an inconvenience. Many students were very pleased Obama had chosen Kent State University as a campaign stop. The flip side to Obama's visit is there were many students who pulled onto campus, learned what was happening, and went back home. When asked, the next day, why they did not attend class the consensus was all the same. They did not feel like being burdened with the hassle.
The students who were on campus were allowed to sit in the Student Union Hall to listen to Obama's speech. There was a disgruntled attitude when Obama stated he was glad to be in New Pennsylvania. Obama was in New Philadelphia, Ohio. One student has a family member who works closely with the Democratic Party. She stated we should cut Obama some slack for the comment because he is just doing what he is told. That did not make a very good impression on those Kent State students listening to her. Their response was if Obama is only doing what he is told then what will he do if elected to run our country.
One other note of interest concerning Obama occured on Labor Day. Areas of the Ohio turnpike was shut down. This highway is a busy route used by travellers from Michigan and Ohio. Travellers were forced to exit the turnpike and find alternate routes to their destinations. This wasted valuable time and precious gas. The reason for the shut down on one of the busiest holidays of the year? Obama's motorcade was using the turnpike. Enough is enough. Obama is a presidential candidate, not God. Oh, excuse me, Allah.
