Barbara's Bakery Fig Bars, Blueberry Flavor

Katri Marson

I had a strange desperate craving for fig bars not too long ago. I don't eat the Newton brand fig cookies because I prefer to go natural, So I chose a more natural brand from a company I like, Barbara's Bakery Fig bars, blueberry flavor. I normally buy Fig Newman's, Newman's Own brand, but the store I purchased from did not have that brand.

I was a little disappointed in these. Don't get me wrong they taste really good but the texture was not exactly what I wanted or was expecting. The outer bar cookie part was rather thin and soft. Most of the bars the blue berry fig middle had soaked into the outer cookie bar so you couldn't tell the difference between where the bar started and the blueberry filling began. It just felt like a soft sweet filling more than a cookie with filling in it. It was too soft and no separation between. They were almost gooey.

I thought maybe if I tried refrigerating them that would help, but the blueberry filling soaks into the cookie bar so even the refrigerator couldn't help. The great thing is that these do not have any sugar added to them they are sweetened with fruit juice and they are very, very sweet. You will not miss the sugar at all. The fruit juice sweetener might be why they are not as dry as they should be? I'm not sure but that is my guess.

They come in a 12 ounce package with about 18 bars in the pack. The serving size is 2 bars and a single serving contains 120 calories and only 1 tiny gram of fat but 16 grams of sugar and just a 1 single gram of protein. These are not gluten-free. They do contain wheat but the wheat is whole grain, for those you do not need to refrain from consuming wheat. These are also vegan.

I am use to the Newman Own brand which have a drier and thicker outer bar. And an all around taste and texture more like the Newton brand most are use to. The Barbara's brand I purchased is blueberry flavor so I did not expect a 100% authentic fig bar taste. The blueberry flavor is noticeable and not too overpowered by the other fruits that also fill out the filling.

I like Barbara's Bakery Blueberry Fig bars and would probably buy them again but probably not if I was looking to satisfy a traditional fig bar craving or if the store I was at had a choice between Fig Newman's and Barbara's. I noticed that Barbara's Bakery did have a couple more flavor choices so I plan on checking those out soon to see if they are any better, worse or the same.
