I too, am always on the hunt for the "perfect" party favor. After all I want my kid to be liked and get good gifts too!!!! As I planned my daughters 4th birthday party. I had the "perfect" idea enter my brain. To accompany the Barbie theme and the hired actor who was portraying Barbie I had the idea to buy each attendee a Barbie doll of her very own. Each doll was unique to the invitees personality and wrapped in coordinating paper with streaming ribbon. I found gymnast Barbie, dancing Barbie, swimsuit Barbie and Halloween Barbie for my daughters friend who favored the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz.
As the actress playing Barbie made her grand entrance she called each girls name and handed them their special and perfect favor. Instead of a bag full of erasers, spider rings and smiley face pencils each girl left the party with her own gift. When all was said and done it did not cost too much more to buy the Barbies for 6 girls then it would have to buy all the typical use garbage that we continually stuff in goodie bags. Our local grocery store, yes grocery store, offers a toy aisle. They often have toys at discount prices as the season changes. Luckily my daughter's birthday is early January. So hunting for discount toys is not as difficult after the holiday season as it may be other times of the year. So in this respect, we were fortnate to get the dolls at a great price.
I also arranged for each girl to pose with her Barbie next to the real life Barbie for a picture. When it was time to send thank you notes, I slipped the pictures in each note as an additional memory of the day. While it's always fun to receive gifts this day taught my daughter that it's just as special to give gifts too.
All the girls had a wonderful time!! Each year as my daughters birthday party approaches she remember fondly her special Barbie birthday. It was so much fun to "give back" to the givers at the party.
