Barbie Face Jewelry: Creepy or Couture?

Drew Taylor
The Barbie brand has evolved beyond child's play thing into an American icon featuring high-end collectibles for adults. The latest offering featured on BarbieCollector.com is handmade jewelry from artist Margaux Lange. The collection includes classic designs in addition to some unique pieces that repurpose salvaged Barbie faces.

2010 Margaux Lange Barbie Jewelry Collection
Instead of jewels or stones, the sterling silver Smile and Eye bracelet features assorted Barbie mouths and eyes. The bracelet costs $800 and is part of a limited edition of five. The Smile pin and Smile earrings with cubic zirconia also feature Barbie mouths. Less jarring -- perhaps because it is mostly intact -- is the Mr. Handsome necklace that features half of a blonde Ken doll head.

On her website, Lange explains her inspiration, "I enjoy the funny juxtaposition of wearing the body, on the body. Barbie has become the accessory instead of being accessorized. I take pleasure in the contrast and contradiction of transforming something mass-produced into unique, handmade, wearable pieces of art."

Midge's Mind Blog
Lange's website and blog offer additional insight on her creative philosophy and highlights her body of plastic work, including earrings (The Hearring Blossoms are a rather literal interpretation.), necklaces, bracelets, brooches and rings. Her blog, aptly titled Midge's Mind, reveals more of her creative process and the story behind some of her custom jewelry creations.

Is Margaux Lange's Barbie jewelry creepy or couture?
Seeing this jewelry mirrored my reaction to Sarah Jessica Parker; I was unsure if it was merely unusual or beautiful. There is a beautiful simplicity in the perfectly painted Barbie faces, but there is also an eeriness about the disembodied Barbie doll parts. Visit MargauxLange.com to view more of the artist's work and decide for yourself if it is creepy or couture.

I don't think I could wear this Barbie jewelry! It goes down as creepy to me. Interesting article and topic!

I took a look at some of the jewelry and am not impressed with the artists' creations. Some seem to be for shock value alone (which will probably make them bestsellers with certain celebs). The heart-shaped designs could have been attractive except that they promote Barbie's "cleavage" and beyond. Thanks for updating me on this possible trend. Odd that it would be linked to the Barbie site except that I guess the site isn't just aimed at children.

Barbie is definitely creepy. I never got my daughters Barbies, but they ended up getting them as gifts anyway, and I was delighted when they pulled off the head, arms and legs and put them back in the wrong places.

I'll have to check it out. I'll get back to you!
