Barbie Vs Rockabilly

Missy W.
When it comes to looks, I like to think of myself as the "girl next door" type. You know, the kind of girl who doesn't where much (if any) make-up and usually has her hair in a pony tail rather than a perfectly coiffed 'do. There are times when I have been able to pull out all the stops and look pretty damned good if I do say so myself. But, like any other woman, those results require a certain amount of time for prep and execution, time which, on a daily basis I am just not willing to invest for the sake of my coworkers and friends, and even my boyfriend who should get to see me all dolled up more than anyone else. But like I said, it's an investment I am not willing to make.

Some women are more than happy to make it though. Some women are more than happy to sit in front of their vanity and/or bathroom mirrors and apply the layers of moisturizers and make-up, pluck the hairs curl the lashes. After the make-up comes the hair. Combing, applying product, blow drying, applying more product, curling, rolling and last but not least, applying more product. Do not forget that this is in between trips to the salon that take anywhere from an hour to three and cost anywhere from thirty dollars for a trim to 300 dollars for a cut and quality colouring.

Now that you have had a quick primer into the morning routine of women, I can tell you what I originally came here to talk about: Woman who think they are better than other woman even though they have the same routines, just different colours. What am I talking about you ask? I am talking about the blond barbie dolls versus the dark pin-up girls.

Blond Barbie dolls look down at the dark pin-up girls because of her tatoos, her piercings and her flaming red, pink or jet black hair. They see the heavy black eyeliner, the skin tight clothes with skulls on them and think "Oh my!". It is the same for the dark pin-up girl. She sees the blond hair with obviously unnatural highlights, the fake tans and belly button rings and thinks "Oh not another one!".

What these two types of women do not realize is that they are exactly the same, just their colour palettes are different. Each spends an equal amount of time penciling on eyebrows, blending their eye shadows just so and an equal amount of money on their hair. (Trust me, it takes a alot more than you think to have pink hair.) The money that the blond spends on her fake tan in the winter is actually probably less than the dark pin-up spends on her tattoo that season.

Each of the girls/women looks at their darker/brighter counterparts and thinks "Why?". "Why don't they want to conform? Why do they want to conform?" and yet both parties blend into their own respective crowds. The blonds stand out because they spend the money and the time to make themselves stunning on a daily basis. The pin-up girl stands out because she has pink hair and tatoos but is equally stunning to people with those tastes. The pin up girl says "I refuse to conform" yet, when she is with her friends, she doesn't stand out, they have as many or more tattoos, and equal number of showy piercings and their make up and hair took them just as long. So really, what is she rebelling against?

Don't take this is a rant againt the dark pin-up / rock-a-billy chick. If I had my way I would look like one of these women in a heart beat. Unfortunately I neither have cash or the will to spend that amount of time preening. They are sexy though aren't they?

The point of this rant turned ramble is just that no matter how different people look o the outside, we really all came fromt he same mold. So no matter how much time you spend to look different, just remember someone else is spending more time and more money and will come out looking just like you whether you are blonde with a fake tan or you have pink hair and two full sleeves of tatoos.
