Barefoot Days

Summer Poems for the Careless

Kim O'Neal
Sun Day

On her elbows
Feet to the sky
She watches her toes wiggle
With clouds rolling by

The best day of my life
I'll tell if you ask
Is feet to the sun
And back to the grass

Sandals

A dark chocolate chip
Toasting on powdered sugar sands
The Jamaican beach baby in sandals
Teaches me how to sip coconut juice through two straws
His braided hair pulls his skin tight
Into a hard-candy smile

Zin

Take a walk
Through Downtown Denver
On a city summer night

The hum of traffic
The oil of streetlights
Splash on the windows
Of cars driving by

His saddle shoes and his pencil mustache
Her earrings dangle like stars off the moon
Maraschino cherries and a jug of white zin
Followed by coffee and tipsy haikus

On a night like this
Sky black as pitch
Fireflies dangle from strings
In cafe doorways

Take a seat outside Shakespeare's and discuss important things
Like Katherine's new haircut, and your new pair of shades

Great imagery, your description were enchanting and I'd love: Maraschino cherries and a jug of white zin
Followed by coffee and tipsy haikus
