Bargain Shopping in the Kansas City Area: The Recycled Kid

Rebecca Hayes
This store was what saved me during my pregnancy. Not only do they offer gently used kids clothes and toys, but they also offer gently used maternity clothes. When I was pregnant with my son, my husband was going to school and working only part-time. I was also working, but only part-time too, so between paying for school and doctor bills, there wasn't much money left over for maternity clothes. Maternity clothes are so expensive and it was so hard for me to pay $40 for a pair of pants I knew I would only wear for a few months. So when I found out The Recycled Kid offered maternity clothes I was there often once a week to check out their new stuff. I was able to keep my growing belly covered for around $100 and I felt like I looked good too. That is always a major plus when you are gaining weight faster than you ever thought possible and your back aches.

After the baby came along we frequented to store to fill in the gaps in our new son's wardrobe. My grandmother was kind enough to throw a huge baby shower for us and we had tons of adorable clothes, but we didn't receive a single onesie, or pair of pajamas. So it was off to The Recycled Kid, where we found exactly what we needed.

Some of the items are even brand new, they are simply consignment items, which means that the manufacturer made too many or needs to get rid of them to put new season items out on the shelf. So they end up at The Recycled Kid. It may be that you end up getting a winter outfit in the middle of summer, but as long as you buy a bigger size no one can argue with the great prices.

The last time I went in, I was just browsing. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular. My son saw a fun little "Playskool" table toy and just loved it. It played music, had a train and lit up. He didn't want to leave it, and when I checked out the price and saw that it was only $8.99 I thought well his birthday is coming up in about three weeks and I already know he loves it, so why not? I also found an adorable brand new pirate costume. My husband was ecstatic when I showed it to him. He's been talking about dressing our son up as a pirate for Halloween since he was born. He was even more excited when I told him that it was only $10.

Along with clothing and toys, The Recycled Kid also offers shoes, cribs, strollers, bassinets, pack-n-plays, exersaucers, swings and other baby gear. They will also buy gently used items and pay 40% of the items selling price. For safety reasons they can't buy back carseats, stuffed animals or bedding.
