The Design District or Fashion District in Chelsea should be your first port of call. Ok, now fashion in New York is renowned for being expensive, but the Fashion District has numerous stores that offer damaged and or overstocked items at bargain prices.
Not only that, every Spring and Autumn the famous Sample Sales are held. This is where designers, who have over stocked or had returns on items from the Department stores, find themselves needing to off load their apparel. Good news for the bargain hunters among us. I once picked up a $350 pair of pants for $50.
Hot Tip - If you want bottom line bargain prices and aren't so worried about getting your favorite items from certain designers, head on over to the sale on the last day. Designers want to get rid of the stock so the last day may not have the best selection, but it will have the rock bottom prices.
The best sample sales are run by independent marketers who only advertise their sale to their special list. So do a search online and get yourself on every list. You'll also find people on the street handing out flyers for the sales that day on Broadway.
The other place to visit for bargain shopping in New York City is the Up Town Charity stores.
If you walk around Third and Fifth Avenue, between Fifty Second and Seventy Second Street, there are a number of charity stores that the fashionistas of New York dump their 'only worn once' designer labels for charities to sell to make money.
It's a feel good shop all around. Not only will you feel good getting your bargains, but also the money goes to charity. It's a double whammy.
The stores come and go, though there are a number of them that are stable and have been around for years. It's a great walk, and worth the visit. So you see, shopping in New York and more to the point, getting high fashion items from the Big Apple, doesn't have to cost you your mortgage. There is such a thing as bargain shopping in New York City.
