Bargains on Christmas Movie DVDs

Six Places to Get Cheap Christmas Movies

K. N. Singer
One of our family's Christmas traditions includes the 1954 Bing Crosby movie, White Christmas. Personally, as far as Christmas movies go, I prefer It's a Wonderful Life, but White Christmas is my mother's favorite Christmas movie, so we all cuddle up on the couch each Christmas and pop in the DVD. Does your family have a favorite Christmas movie, or do you just like having plenty of Christmas movie DVDs on-hand during the holiday season? Here are a few places you can find bargains on Christmas movie DVDs.

1. I love those bargain bins

All year long, not just during Christmas, big retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and others keep a bargain bin of their overstocked DVDs. If you want a new release, then the bargain bin is not for you. But if it's older Christmas movies or obscure Christmas movies that you like, you might just find it for under $10 in your local bargain bin. Keep your eyes peeled!

2. Buy a used DVD from Amazon.com

As I mentioned in a previous article on iPod Christmas bargains, I also love that Amazon marketplace. You can find used Christmas movie DVDs for often 50% off their new retail price or less. And, if your third-party seller claims its scratch free, but it won't play in your DVD player due to its less-than-gently-used condition, Amazon offers buyer protection, so you can get your money back.

3. Blockbuster sells DVDs, too

Blockbuster isn't just for renting a movie on Friday night anymore. The rental giant also sells DVDs - both used and new. I checked out their online store's available Christmas movie DVDs, and to be honest with you the selection isn't fantastic. You might have better luck keeping watch for Christmas movie bargains at your local Blockbuster branch.

4. If you were going to join Columbia House anyway...

Although I haven't gotten any invitations recently, I used to get a constant stream of invitations from Columbia House, the mail-order DVD and CD store. When you first sign up with Columbia House, you can get seven Christmas movie DVDs for 49 cents each! Some of their Christmas movie DVD offerings include: Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, eLf, Scrooge, A Christmas Story, and, yes, White Christmas.

5. And let's not forget about eBay

eBay is a Christmas bargain-hunter's paradise, and that's true for Christmas movie DVDs, too. A quick search on their site for "Christmas movies" turned up over 15,000 results, starting with a DVD priced at $5. eBay is probably one of the best options when you want one particular movie, since buying Christmas movies en masse from eBay will probably entail paying shipping on each DVD, which in some cases might even be nearly the same price as the DVD itself! But if you have one Christmas movie in particular that you want, and you don't want to pay much for it, eBay is a great place to look.

6. Never turn down a good yard sale

I was surprised to find at our church's recent yard sale that videos, movies, CDs, and books were being sold for twenty-five or fifty cents. It seemed that it was the end of the day, and the people running the yard sale had gotten tired and wanted to go home, so they were trying to get rid of the rest of their inventory so they didn't have to haul it to a place like Goodwill. Now, I didn't see any Christmas movies amongst the DVDs, but that doesn't mean that another yard sale wouldn't have such movies. Check the DVD for scratches before you buy - but hey, for a quarter, do you really even care if it's a little scratched?
