Barlean's Flax Oil for Animals

Just recently I purchased Barlean's Flax Oil for Animals, for my cat. My kitty has some minor, but annoying, itching and inflammation issues. I hoped that Barlean's Flax Oil for Animals would help with her problems and help her avoid any steroid shot and me vet bills.

I didn't think there would be any issues with her eating it because I have had flax before and the smell isn't that strong. I equally didn't notice much of a smell with the Barlean's Flax Oil for Animals. I am aware that cats have a much stronger sense of smell, but I still figured it wouldn't be too strong for my kitty either.

I decided to separate a little part of her dry food and sprinkle half a dose (¼ teaspoon) on to it and stir it in a little. I left only that food out to see how she likes it. The look on her face when she smelled it was a look of "What is this?" Even with that look I left that food and only that little bit of food. I figured if she ate that I would put her normal food back out and we can easily do that every day.

She went without eating the times she normally would that day. I tried to stay strong. At one point I heard her munching but the munching was not much. I eventually gave up because I didn't want my kitty to suffer, plus she would starve to death if we had to do this everyday just to get her daily dose in.

I ended up going to the store and buying her some wet food. I have never had any trouble with her eating anything I put in wet food, that is until Barlean's Flax Oil came along. I put in a tiny dose in with the food and she tried to eat it but even wet food wasn't enough incentive for her.

My last resort was to get a syringe and squirt it down her throat everyday. I figured that would not be pleasant for either one of us. I decided to look into other natural means that satisfy both of us first before resorting to forcing the oil down her throat.

I don't know for sure if it is the flax that my cat doesn't like or if it is the added rosemary antioxidant blend in it. I'm think it is the antioxidant blend since it adds a slight bitterness to it.

All is not lost though. I have started using the Barlean's Flax Oil for Animals for myself. It turns out it is really good on popcorn with a little nutritional yeast and salt. I am aware it is 'for animals' but really it is the same ingredients we would eat.

It is nice that it makes it easy to use for your pets, if you can get them to take it. It has the recommended serving on the bottle. It has serving recommendations for cats, dogs and ever cows and horses. The serving recommendation goes by weight.

I would definitely buy this product again, although not for my cat. I would say if you have a pet who has skin and inflammation issues then give it a try. If they end up not liking it you can always use it for yourself.
