Barnes & Noble NOOKColor

The Unintentional Android Tablet

Rachel Soden
The NOOKColor is an e-reader that is distributed by Barnes & Noble for approximately $250. The device runs on an Android operating system but is used for reading electronic books and playing a couple games. It is not designed to be a fully fledged Android tablet. Not at first anyway.

What Barnes & Noble didn't intend was for hackers to figure out how to get the NOOKColor to run the full Android operating system. You have to take the Android to root. Once you have root access, you can install the Android operating system. From there, you can install all manner of applications on your Android device just as you can on a Samsung Galaxy or a Motorola Xoom.

Steps

Charge the NOOKColor.

Register the Nook with your Barnes & Noble Account. You must do this before you finish the rest of this process. You cannot do it later.

Check your NOOKColor software version. Go to Settings > Device Info > About Your Nook.

Download Win32DiskImager to a MicroSD card.

Download auto nooter to your personal computer. Unzip the file to your computer.

Open Win32DiskImage.EXE. Click on the folder icon. Select the auto nooter file on your computer.

Click the Device drop-down box. Select your SD card. Click the Write button. Click Exit.

Power off the NOOKColor. Put the SD Card into the device. Plug the NOOKColor into the your computer using your USB cord.

The Root process will begin.

Tips:

Download an app such as HelixLauncher to change your homescreen application.
